I can't connect to the internet

I'm hoping someone can help me. For the first time, I'm absolutely stumped on what I did to my PC. Last night I was trying to watch DVDs on my PC so I went to microsoft and downloaded some drivers and encoders in an effort to make it work (it didn't work) so I deleted some stuff and now I can't connect. Right now I'm using a laptop connected to the modem and it's working fine but when I attach the connection to the PC, it's not working. My cable company said they can see me there (whatever that means, something with an IP address) and can talk to my modem, I just can't get out to the internet on the desktop.

does anyone have any idea what might be wrong or where I should start looking? Is there any way to restore my system to the way it was last night before I started fooling with it?

In General you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer’s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost <http://www.ezlan.net/faq>

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.
