I cannot download any of the software programs from this or any other site, including Microsoft site. (except auto-Microsoft Windows-updates seem to work); nothing else from the Microsoft site; for example, I tried to get Internet explorer updates.
I have tried changing the settings inside IE-Tools-Security-activeX and download choices.
I've gotten through the steps included in the post 'new to this site' instructions, and can't get any of the 'cleaner' programs to download.
Computer is a Dell Dimension 4100, WinXP Home SP 2, Iintel Pentium 3, 384MB, 930Mhz

What's happening? How are you trying to download stuff?

    What Firewall do you use?

Try a different browser, FireFox is very good and may overcome this prob.

When trying to DL from this site try using different mirrors. I come from Oz and have trouble with one mirror but if I use the other works each time.

As for security, I was stupid enough to shell out the $ for Norton Systemworks 2006 (I am unimpressed) but I don't believe that is the issue, because even when I turn it off (disable protection) I am still unable to download. I thought XP sp2 has a firewall, too.

What happens when I click download (both on this site and others): the next window in the series comes up (usually it says 'click here if the download doesn't start in a few seconds'), and I'll click it, too, and the URL is displayed as a flash of text along the bottom of the window, a small square window of white appears as a new window in the upper left of the screen, and immediately disappears, and ...then nothing.

Over time, I've tried all the different choices for download sites, with a US flag. (= different mirrors)
OH! Also, I cannot right-click on my mouse inside IE.

Try these one at a time>

    Try this to repair IE
    Start/Run/regsvr32 urlmon.dll

    OR

    To reinstall IE
    Start/run/rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

thanks for the Start/Run... suggestions. I tried the first one.
It said" DllRegisterServer in Urlmon.dll successful."
(do I have to shut down IE when this is run?)

I'll try the second suggestion next ... because I can't right-mouse click to copy/paste, I have to copy it down long- hand.

Ok, the second one prompted me to find the .exe on the service pack 2 upgrade disk I got from Microsoft. I don't see that program on that disk. ideas as to where I could browse to find where it is? by default does Windows have these files in a specific place?

This could be a Content Advisor issue, try the steps below then try to right-click. If it works try another download

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Contents > Content Advisor > Disable it.

I checked the content advisor. it was not enabled. Still cannot right-click within IE.

Also, in trying to: rundll32.exe setupapi...
The system keeps asking me to insert the Windows XP home disk, then the service pack 2 disk, and so forth, from which it is copying files. It recognizes the files from the disk are older than the ones on the hard drive, and it can't find several of the .exe files. (groan)...

Lets try the obvious switch off and unplug > replug in the mouse.

Goto device manager and look at mice and other pointers are there any errors here?

Was there any luck in DL FF??

I don't believe that the problem lies in the mouse, because it has no trouble with Microsoft Word, & other applications; it just doesn't do anything when I right-click inside of IE. Device manager says device is fine- (it was a good idea to check; I hadn't thought of that.)
I am unable to download FireFox Mozilla because I can't download programs.

Butting in .... are you having other issues as well? Reason I ask is you reported ram as 348 .... 320 I could believe, 384 I could believe ... typo?
What are your security settings in I.E., also, what is enabled in the advanced tab?

It is looking for the files you used to install SP2. Are they on the drive somewhere or on a disc?

If the SP2 is a exe file you will have to extract it. The extracted files are where you want to direct it too when ruuning rundll32.

    Oops... correction: 384MB RAM
Security on the Advanced tab: Only the following are checked:
    Check publishers certification revoc.
Check for signatures on downloaded programs
    Empty temp files
    Enable integrated Windows authentication
    Enable profile asst.
    Use SSL 2.0
    Use SSL 3.0
    Warn about Invalid site certific.
    Warn if forms submittal redirected

I absolutely did have problems (Winfixer) previously. Symantec/Norton SystemWorks supposedly cleaned it. The site 'Trendmicro' has a remote scan that i've run on my computer, and it still says Winfixer is present, I click 'remove/clean' and rescan, but it still sees Winfixer after that.

As for reloading IE, I stuck both the 'WinXP Home edition' and the SP2 disks from Microsoft into two CD drives, and couldn't really get the IE reload to complete.

(this step above was what I was referring to just now). Do the files on the disks have to be extracted?

Backing up a step or two.... you said a scan showed winfixer is present ....did it give an exact address (i.e.: C/Doc and Settings/User/local settings/I.E.6/temp....)? Can you right click on start/click explore/ once it opens go to tools / file options /view tab and enable show hidden files and folders and see if you can find the file. Delete it manually, if you can find it.
