I can't open a lot of links

For a month or so, I've been unable to open a lot of links. I didn't change any of my security settings or download any new anti-virus, spyware, malware, etc, programs. I've downloaded programs and files, such as divx or Dial-a-fix, but nothing that should have changed my privacy settings. Right now, I have my setting down as low as they can possibly go without just turning off my firewall (Sygate) and anti-virus program (AVG). I also turned off my pop-up blocker. I had Bit Defender but my pc wouldn't allow it to upload updates to it so I uninstalled it. I ran the whole battery of anti-virus/adware/malware/grayware/trojan/worm programs that are recommended here and I received a clean bill of health.

Another problem I have is that after I open about 40 to 60 sites, my pc slows down to a crawl when I try to open more sites. I have to reboot to be able to go faster again.

Are there any known fixes for these problems?

    First thing first,
2 anti-virus make youre computer  complicated
so stick to one only if you choose AVG then AVG only, if BD then thats only
so its good that you uninstall the BD

then you mean 40 to 60 sites at once?? then youre memory cant accomodate it, because as your specs about youre pc, youre running so many anti-spyware

    Memory cant hold it anymore

    infoseeker

Denise, which browser are you using, if IE try Firefox or Opera, or vice versa, does a different browser help? ( workaround temp fix/narrowing cause down really as I'm not advocating swapping browsers )

also I would follow the guide here, no need to attach logs unless something is found.. more so I'm thinking the cleaning routines http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 I know you have run many applications already but the linear steps above and from safe mode do help trace some issues down.

What are your PC specs, as in CPU Ram etc

Do you have many background tasks running ( the amount of icons in the system tray is a give away or CTRL-ALT-DEL and whats the amount of running processes )

What security apps do you have installed?

Hi Halo, Thanks for your interest and help. I haven't tried a new browser but I have 28 processes running in Windows Task Manager under the Processes tab. I don't know which ones are critical and which ones can be stopped/manual/on demand. Some easy ones, such as Yahoo Messenger and Quicktime are either stopped or manual/on demand.

Your question to me was the next question that I was going to ask here at MajorGeeks, but I didn't want to overload you all with all of my problems at one time. Most of my problems started about two months ago and I can't remember what I might have done to have caused them. I install and uninstall trial programs a lot from trusted sites, such as MajorGeeks and Microsoft, etc, and if I uninstall them, I run regseeker and PC onPoint, which removes most of the remaining residue.

Right now, the only Applications that are running are "Comcast" (my isp) and "MajorGeeks forums - Reply to topic - Microsoft Internet Explorer"

The Processes that are running are:

ycommon.exe (I believe this is yahoo toolbar)
    IEXPLORE.EXE
    task.mgr
    cidaemon.exe
    avgcc.exe (my anti-virus program)
OneTouch.exe (for Maxtor ext hard drives. I don't use it, but the dire warning it gives when I try to stop it makes me leave it running.)
    MXOALDR.EXE
    mdm.exe
    cisvc.exe
    avgemc.exe
    avgupsvc.exe
    avgamsvr.exe
    scardsvr.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    svchost.exe (user: LOCAL SYSTEM)
    svchost.exe (user: system)
    explorer.exe
    Smc.exe
InCDsrv.exe (I believe this is for Nero)
    svchost.exe (user: SYSTEM)
    svchost.exe (user: NETWORK SERVICE)
    dmadmin.exe
    svchost.exe (user: SYSTEM)
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    vssvc.exe
    winlogon.exe
    csrss.exe
    smss.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    locator.exe
    webshots.scr (my wallpaper)
    svchost.exe (user: SYSTEM)
    wmiprvse.exe
    ctfmon.exe
    System
System Idle Process (uses between 85 to 95 cpu)

I don't know why I have so many svchost.exe files but I had a near fatal problem with those files last week. The thread is located at http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=819051#post819051

I followed the routine at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 about a few weeks ago and nothing was found except a few cookies. When I posted the results at the HiJackThis Log forum, someone asked me why I posted the results when nothing is wrong with my pc, lol. I might not have a virus, trojan, worm or any other undesireable files in my pc but it's just not running right. I use Dial-a-Fix and I "repaired permission," and I flush DNS and purge SFC on a daily basis. I also used the option to Flush Software Distribution, ran the Registration Center for the 5 options, and ran SSL/HTTPS/Cryptsvc for the 4 options. I use CCleaner several times a day and I defrag at least once every two weeks because I upload and download large amounts of info on a daily basis, and I reboot at least 10 times a day to increase the speed of my pc.

But all the "fixes" I've tried haven't fixed the problems with my pc and I'm completely out of ideas, except a complete reformat, but I've never done one so I'm leaving that as my last resort. I'm sure it's just a few settings that need to be changed but I don't which ones. I've lowered my security until it's almost next to nothing so that I can open links.

In Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Default
In Control Panel > Internet Options > Security Tab > Restricted Sites > High

I can't reduce the High setting to Medium High or Medium. When I try, I receive a message that says "The recommended security for this level is High. The level that you have chosen is lower than this. Please choose a security level of "High" or higher." And it moves the lever back up to High.

Another fine mess I've gotten myself in!

Go thru Add/Remove in the control panel and uninstall the Yahoo Toolbar.

    Try the links now.

    Hi Matacombe,

I installed the Yahoo toolbar because I had it for a couple of years but never used it and I deleted it a few weeks ago. After I deleted it, my pc was able to open less links, so I just reinstalled it and it's helped. It asks me if I want to open a page or allow a pop-up, whereas, without the toolbar, I don't get a choice as to whether or not I want the pop-up, which is oftentimes a link, and nothing opens.

This must all be related to some settings in my pc that somehow got changed, because I usually don't change them. A program(s) that I downloaded may have changed them but I don't know which program(s) might have done it or what settings changes it/they might have made.

    Hi Halo,

I just re-read your post and it seems that I didn't give you the info that you asked for, so I just ran a Belarc. I was going to attach it to this post but the file size is too big for an attachment, so this is the info about my pc. Most, if not all, of the external hard drives are usually turned off. I only turn them on to place a file into one or more of them and then I turn them off.

Also, I deleted the serial numbers and the key numbers for the programs.

Do you know what this is Symantec Core Component Version 1, 8, 50, 196 ?

How long have you had AVG and Sygate, did you have Norton's before? If this all started around the time you uninstalled Norton's you might still have some Symantec stuff still on your pc.

If you had any of the Symantec software installed let us know which one.

    Hi Matacombie,

I had Norton installed for a couple of weeks. I ran a program to delete it and downloaded AVG. I didn't uninstall Norton by Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

The StepByStep entries on my log came from
    http://harrisonrj.home.comcast.net/step_by_step_pc_cleaning_process.htm
I got down to Boot State = Normal Boot. When I pressed 1, nothing happened. When I pressed 2, 3 and 4, nothing happened so I exited.

I ran the Windows XP Security Advisor: What's Your PC Status? test at http://www.liutilities.com/products/campaigns/plib/wintasks/ These are the results:

I don't know why it would say that my security is poor when I have Sygate firewall and AVG Anti-Virus. I also run Spybot, Microsoft Malicious Softwre Removal tool, and Ad-Aware.

Would you tell me which resources and processes that are running in the background can be stopped/put on demand only? The only icons in my system tray are Sygate firewall, AVG, Webshots, and the icon of two monitors for my internet connection.

I often use PC onPoint, RegSeeker and CCleaner to clean up my pc but there are things that the programs miss.

Since my System Idle Process is high, I don't understand why my pc's speed degrades after I open pages. By the time I've opened 40 or 50 pages, I have to wait between 45-60 seconds for a page to open so I reboot.

Would increasing the size of one or more caches help?

I uninstalled Bit Defender because it couldn't get updated. Now I have only Sygate firewall and AVG.

Sorry to say Denise that that test at liutilities is not a real test but an advert.. everyone who goes to that page will get the same info.

You dont have many running processes at all 33 if I counted correctly, so thats not alot and th eones you have are legit.

Like Steve, I have to wonder if as you said you didnt remove Norton from Add/remove that the process you ran to remobve Norton didnt remove it all and any left over core Norton components are conflicting with your new AVG AV... so as Steve is adept at removing Norton, we woudl need to know what product you had installed as Symantec have specilist removal tools to get any stubborn reminents off your PC.

First, look in the Add/Remove programs and make sure the Norton's is still not there. If it is, remove it. Then download and run the Norton Removal Tool here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4749

Test your links again and see if they work now. If not, reset your web settings and see if that helps.

    1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

    2. Click the Programs tab.

    3. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

    Hi Steve and Halo,

Halo, thanks for the tip on liutilities.

As I stated in another of my posts here, I ran the Norton program but I don't know if it helped yet or not. It's too soon to tell. I still have Symantec Core LR in Computer Management > Services.

    I also did

    1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Programs tab.
    3. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

But, again, it's too soon to tell. Hopefully these steps will resolve most of my problems. I know that I have a slow processor but what I've been getting for the past month is much slower than it's ever been. A month ago, it pretty well zoomed along. I'd click and a second or two later, the page was there or a folder opened. Now everything drags. My pc is almost 4 years old and it's gotten a lot of use, almost 24/7, so maybe it's just getting worn out, but I'm still wondering if it's more than that.

Y'all are gonna hit your foreheads with disbelief when I tell you this . . . I just bought a barebones kit, lol . . . I'm just waiting for an anti-static wristband and memory to arrive and then I'll start putting it together. I'm going to network it with this pc because it still has life in it and I'll be able to get a lot more work done . . . I may not survive the experience though. If you don't hear from me at least once a week, call in a pizza delivery for me. I like Chinese food too. :)

I just reread your posts and saw questions that I didn't answer.

I didn't follow a list as in "Did you also follow a list like this to disable Services? http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12."

I believe that I might have gotten the url from someone here. I had said in a post that I have Sygate firewall and a 30-day trial version of Norton. Someone said "Nortun, huh?" and I said that if anyone had a better anti-virus program, I'd be all ears. I was given a link to a program to uninstall Norton and was given the link for AVG. That was about a month ago, but time flies sometimes so it could be up to two months ago, at the max, so maybe it was around the time that my pc started having problems. About a week ago, Bit Defender stopped being able to receive updates and I uninstalled it.

To uninstall Norton, I followed a link more like what Steve gave me. I downloaded and ran the uninstaller that Steve just gave me to be on the safe side.

I have no idea what Symantec Core Component Version 1, 8, 50, 196 is, unless it came with Norton when I downloaded it. I still have Symantec Core LC in Computer Management > Services though, but I didn't turn it on.

To give you an idea of how slow my pc is, I used to have only 256Mb of RAM. About 6 months ago, I added a 518Mb stick of RAM. My pc now runs slower than when I had only 256Mb of RAM . . . more like 1/2 of 256Mb.

I ran Housecall yesterday and it found no problems. I also ran Microsoft Malicious in Safe Mode and it found nothing, and Spybot found nothing except that I had automatic updates and Windows firewall turned off. Ad-Aware found some cookies. An AVG scan found nothing either. So I think it's safe to say that I don't have a virus/worm/trojan, etc.

That's about all the information that I can think of to give you.

Something just came up. Last night, I did a search for Norton using the options to search system and hidden folders and files. It came up with a few files, but nothing with the name Norton. I also did the same kind of search for Symantec and again the search came up with a few files and again the name didn't have Symantec on them. The names were more like "a4ebi2se" (not one of the real file names).

It was late so I went to bed and was going to do the searches again today but I had a hectic morning. I ran the searches now, after running the program that you gave me, Steve, and those files didn't show up in the search.

    Interesting.

    Hi Halo and Steve,

My pc is moving along at a pretty good clip now. I was just at eBay and when I'm there, I open and close a lot of pages and it didn't slow my pc down at all.

Getting a little side-tracked, I just won an auction at eBay for a 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Maxtor OEM SATA Hard Drive, Aluminum External USB 2.0 & SATA enclosure with a SATA and USB 2.0 ports and the cables for both for $70.01. I'm very happy! One man paid over $112.00 for one this morning. He isn't very bright because he could have done a BIN for $99.00.

Anyway, the reason for bringing up eBay was because if my pc speed didn't increase, I never would have won the bid. I came in under 30 seconds and it would've taken at least a minute to get the bid qualified at the speed I was going this morning. Within 30 seconds, I placed the bid, confirmed it and checked the auction page 2 times to see how I was doing. That's the way I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh . . .

    Denise :)

One thing you might be interested in Denise. I do that on eBay from time to time, try to get in at the last second. It works most of the time, but I have noticed that if you are watching a certain item and keep "refreshing" the page that it will at times be very slow coming back the more you do it. You just never knew how long it would take when trying to time it over and over again. I always thought maybe it was something eBay had done to discourage everybody from waiting till the last minute to bid on stuff.

So if that is where the slow response is coming from I don't think I would blame that on my computer's performance. If it happens on other sites also that's different.

    Hi Steve,

It wasn't just at eBay that my pc would slow down when opening pages, it was throughout the internet, even here at MajorGeeks. I do searches here and then I check out TigerDirect or NewEgg, Google things, and check out things on the internet . . . all over. I didn't have a slowdown at eBay at all and I was here making a few posts and reading some posts before I went to eBay. The only time I see a slowdown is if I'm running a program, like right now I'm running SpyBot. My pc is pretty slow opening pages whereas it wasn't as slow as that a month or so ago. But it's running 150% better than it did this morning.

This afternoon, when I started all the services and ran the Norton cleaner, my pc picked up speed tremendously. Some services couldn't start so I'm a little concerned about them.

Right now, I'm tying up loose ends, running adware/spyware/trojan/virus programs, CCleaner, Pc OnPoint, RegSeeker and I defragged. When I'm finished, I'll create a restore point. I don't know if I'll be able to open all the links that I want to open but I've been able to so far, but then again, I didn't do much surfing today. I think we made a huge step in the right direction though, thanks to you and Halo. Thank you both very much!

Hey no Good luck with the new PC build, but we will all be here to assist if you need us, BTW I love chinese too ;)

The Symantec Core app and MS OneCare still resitident in services, worries me a touch, especially that they were not removed on uninstall, but see how your PC runs for a day or so and we can then remove those unwanted/needed services.

What was the location of those "a4ebi2se" type named files? ( just may give us idea what they maybe, I have two ideas.. but they could be very wrong )

On the services as I mentioned in the other thread they may not actually be needed as you may not have hardware or software installed that calls on those services ( UPS, HID and Telephoney for instance ), so dont worry about them at all, the two I mention above in Symantec and OneCare are the worrying ones.

Ooooh and before I forget, make sure Messenger Service is disabled, in services.

Only attempt the below if you feel like..........

If you wish to remove those two errant services in Symantec and OneCare then you can do that via the registry, but you need to know the exact names of the services to delete as the main name MS gives the files is different in most cases from the Actual Service name, you can while in services double click the OneCare and Symantec services and at the top are the actual Service name which is above the Display name.

eg. AcrSch2Svc ( the Service Name ) has the Service Display Name as Acronis Scheduler2 Service

to delete the service via the registry or from a commandline you will need that Service Name.

    Command line way:
Click start > Run > type CMD > ok, in the does box type sc delete <service name> then hit enter > then reboot the service should have gone, do that for the other one.

    Registry way.
click Start > Run and type regedit > ok

then navigate to this location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services look for the service names on a folder ( will only be one for each of those two services ) but before deleting them Right click the folder and choose Export, name them and save as backups.
