I have a problem that developed over the past week or so.

When I open the SP2 Security Center I now get the message "The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped." This happened once before a few weeks ago. At that time I went into "Services" and started "Security Center" manually. Over the past week when the same problem reoccured when I try that solution I receive this error message: "Could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error123: the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect".

I went back into "Services" and checked the two dependencies that are listed.
    Windows Manager Instrumentation was running.
    Remote Procedure Call was running.
Another with a similar name, Remote Procedure Call Locator wasn't. So I started it.
Unfortunately I get the same error when I try to start Security Services.

    Pentium 4, 2.60 GHz, 512 (496) RAM, XP Home with SP2.

Spybot, AdAware, CCleaner, Spyware Blaster, A2 free, Zone Alarm, Norton AntiVirus & Trojan Hunter are on the system.

How can I get the Sp2 Security Center running again?

    Thank you, Tim.

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is starting normally in Services, however. It is Security Center that appears to be the problem.

I went to the website. It appears that the individual who wrote the list recommends keeping Security Center OFF. I am actually trying to turn it ON, and have been unable.

Do you have onecare live installed?
There are some "bugs" that will disable the security center ...do an online scan at :

    I don't have One Care.

I do however, have Norton AntiVirus 2006. Today Norton crashed and I had to uninstall it and reinstall it.

Funny, I've been having all sorts of problems since I upgraded from Norton AntiVirus 2003 to 2006. Maybe I should just get rid of it and try a different antivirus.

Norton kills your security center ....so that you don't have two firewalls rnning.

Security center is not the firewall. Securty center merely informs you with what is running.

Norton, usually will take control of what Security center is supposed to do, with its own "Security Center".

To the OP, what happens when you go into services and turn on Securty center? Any errors?

Theefool: When I go into services and attempt to open the SP2 Security Center I get this message "The Security Center is currently available because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped." Security Center does not start.

Hrm, I meant, go into services and start the security center service, not open it.

    :)

Just was pointed by someone to a program that starts Security Center, and it did indeed do that.
