I'm not sure if this is in the right place, so if not please let me know. I am not the best when it comes to pc's, but I realize now just how bad it is. I have read many of your forums and instructions, tried things and have gotten no where. Probably even made it worse. Here is what I do know...

I have an acer Extensa 4420 with Vista (32) and an additional D drive with extra memory. I am having problems with drivers, windows updates, Microsoft updates, internet connectivity, and all sorts of stuff I don't even comprehend. Acer is of no help.
I am almost certain there is malware going on here, but don't know how to fix it. I seem to have most problems when booting up, shuting down, and waking from hybernation (it seems many other people have this problem, too).
I did the safe boot thing, and some of the problems seemed to go away. Now I can't remember how to fix it back. The instructions here say to be sure you only have one anti-virus program. I think this is accurate, but I really don't know. I did the suggested scans and came up with all sorts of errors, but don't know how to fix them. I uninstalled these programs (I think) and am hoping to start at the beginning.

Any help that anyone can give would be GREATLY appreciated. Please bare with me as I am not the greatest when it comes to common terminology.
    Thank you in advance.

Okay, you may have alot of other non malware related issues which we can deal with AFTER malware removal. However in order to assist you in removing any nasties I need you to run through as much of our procedures as possible. I see you went through the R&R once but you said you removed everything. So time to start from scratch and we will see what can be done here in this forum as long as you are able to boot up ok in order to do so.

I have gone through all the process and left everything in place. I did go back and set it to reboot as normal and turned the firewall and Trend back on. Was I supposed to do this? Didn't know if I should get on the internet without it.

I could not download MGTools at all. It told me I did not have permission (or something similar).

RootRepeal would not finish scanning. It tried to show an error message several times, but all I could see was the that it was an error and had the red circle with a white x in it. Other than that the box was clear and I could see the items it had scanned in the background.

I think I am to post the logs now, but not sure so I'm posting them. Here are the first 2 logs and I have the ComboFix log saved when you are ready.

    Thanks!

Try again. If you cannot download it from your machine then use another and transfer the MGTools.exe to flashdrive or disk to get on your PC.

Do not worry about RootRepeal, it seems to only have a 50-50 chance of running successfully. However I DO need to see the MGlogs.zip from when you eventually run MGTools in order to assist you. You should also have attached the log from combofix straight away with the others because I may have spotted something that could have been removed. So please attach that also.

    Good Morning-
I was able to download MGTools, but it told me I did not have permission to save on the C drive (?) so I ran it from the desktop. I have attached the zip file from there, and also the ComboFix log.
    Thanks for your help!

I am not seeing any malware. We can clear up a little bit though. Although for other problems you will have to visit the software forum when we are done here.

    1. Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode, if you haven't done so already.

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\program files\Microsoft ATS

    File::
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\263735.od
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\CVR637.tmp.cvr
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\RtkBtMnt.exe
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp1F90.tmp
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp1F90.xml
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp1F91.tmp

    Folder::
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\Low
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\VBE

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    4. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions.

I did the below steps and got the new ComboFix log. However, now any file I try to open (Including the log), or try to get on the internet, or do the last 2 steps of your instructions, I get an error message that says...

Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.

    Did I do something wrong?

Don't know what happened, but it's fine now. Here are the new posts you asked for.

I think I will be sending you to software very soon, however there is a couple things I would like to do first:

    1. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      c:\program files\Microsoft ATS\MATSEvent.DLL
    • At the upload site, click the browse button.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

    2. Could you please get this: MATSEvent.DLL into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:
    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

    3. Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Do I need to turn off Firewall and Anti-virus again and uncheck the UAC before starting?

It should have been at: C:\collect.zip.

    Not to worry anyway.
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
