    i definitley have a problem

hi and thanks for letting me post.

since last saturday my computer has been running very, very slow.
it takes about 40 seconds to log in and about 25 seconds to open the internet.
i don't know why this is. all my programs are up-to-date.
i've run ms anti-spyware, i've run spyware doctor, norton full system scan and come up empty.
apparently my hijackthis log is clean.
i'm no computer expert this is for sure.

my green light keeps blinking and the hdd keeps ticking every 1 - 2 seconds and it's driving me nuts !
anyone able to provide any help ?

i would appreciate it of course cause i'm at a loss.

    thanks
    michael.

No, Viewpoint should be uninstalled but wouldnt slow down the computer.

Please follow standard cleanup procedures as given below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Download HijackThis 1.99.1

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifBefore running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifRun HijackThis and save your log file.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifNeed help with HJT? See this thread: NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Re: i definitley have a problem

Just follow the READ ME, it explains how to download and run everything. After you complete the steps in the READ ME attach a HJT log from normal mode.

See the threads, they are there to help you.

Re: i definitley have a problem

    hi,
ok i've done everything requested and finally finished with all the scanning.

    here are the results,
(and before i start i still have the go, go, go, go stop
go, go, go, go, stop. on my hdd with the green blinking light and it took forever just to restart. and i'm still typing faster than the cursor can move and i'm not a fast typer.

CCLEANER - deleted 22mb worth of files
ADAWARE -got stuck for quite awhile but found 5 negligable objects and removed them
SPYBOT -found 3 registry changes and fixed them
    CWSHREDDER - no infections
KILL2ME -look 2 me removed if present
    STINGER -clean files 59161
    ABOUT BUSTER -clean
    HSR REMOVE -8 itmes removed

and now i've run a hijack this log but will not post it until i'm asked to so just say the word and i will i swear as fast as i can.

thanks very much for looking at this for me.

Have HJT fix this entry below:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm

After you complete the above, reboot and let me know if your having any further Malware problems.

Re: i definitley have a problem

    Download SilentRunners from:
    http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip the archive to your desktop and double click on the VBS file.
(If your AntiVirus alerts, allow the script to run.

Once finished, the script will save a Notepad document to your Desktop.
Please attach the contents of that document into this thread (call it runners.txt).

Re: i definitley have a problem

Generate a StartupList log using HijackThis.
Run HJT and on the first screen, click the button that says "Open the Misc Tools section". In the next window first select "List also minor sections (full)" and then click the button that says "Generate StartupList log". CLick Yes to the Do you want to continue prompt. Now a notepad window will come up with the Startuplist.txt file. It is already saved in the the directory HJT is running from. So just come back here and upload the file as an attachment to your next message.

Glad things are back to normal, since there has been a little confusion can you give me heads up on what the exact problems your having are?

  22. michaelboulton

    michaelboulton Private E-2

    yes of course

since last friday night saturday morning, my computer now takes over a minute to boot up, my start programs take another 1 1/2 mins to start up in the system tray.
it takes forever to open emial, the internet, i can type faster than the cursor moves

there is a constant tick sound from the HD and the green light flashes every second or so, even when idle. this all started last weekend and this is a new dell that i cherish and am at a loss as to why this is happening.

i admit i was using torrents, maybe i caught something but everything is coming up blank so now what ? i don't know.

    thanks for replying !

Sounds as if you could possibly have a HDD going bad if it's making the sound you describe.

    Let's try a registry cleaning...

    Download RegSupreme Pro 1.2

Install this program, after you install you will be prompted to "defrag" you registry for best performance. You can go ahead and click YES, should take but a minute or so.

After this completes at the top, click the REGISTRY CLEANER tab. Then click on "Aggressive" and let it scan. Afterwards you will see the total of invalid entries found. Once its complete, select ALL entries and select FIX. The program will then fix the ones that are fixable, the ones that are not will be removed. Type in a backup filename and save to an easy location just in case.

Let me know the results! After you do this reboot and see if your running any better.
