I have an ASUS U80V running Windows 7, 64 bit 4GB highspeed DSL. All of a sudden, (I can't pinpointwhen but seems like within this last month) IE has started hanging up frequently and I get the message Windows Internet Explorer is not responding. Any idea what would cause this?

Thanks in advance for any and all efforts to help.

What version of IE are ye running? 8 or 9? Have ye tried resetting defaults?

Hit the ALT key, then click Tools, and then internet options.

You need to click the Q. mark on the command bar and click 'About Internet Explorer'.

I am running IE 8. Should I download IE 9?

As you are on Win 7 it should have come down in Windows Updates, but yes, IE9 is one of the very best browsers around - clean interface, lightning fast, think you might like it :)

Seems your Win 7 system may be either corrupted or infected. What security do you have and have you kept it updated and scanned regularly with it? Also, I don't suppose you have a Microsoft Win 7 installation disk by any chance (not the manufacturer's recovery disk)?

  11. texasharper

    texasharper Corporal

Oh, that's just great. I have Avast and have had it for years. Nope. Just Windows 7 Recovery Media.....is that a bad thing?

  12. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

With a full installation disk we could run a check on your system files and correct any issues with them, but that can't be done with a recovery disk. Is Avast set to do automatic updates and regular scans, and if not can you do this manually? Sorry - not familiar with how Avast works.

  13. texasharper

    texasharper Corporal

That's ok. Yes, it auto updates everyday but I do not schedule scans nor do I usually initiate them.

I have a suggested update for spk 1 that fails everytime I try to download it. In services, windows defender is stopped and when I manually start it, it will automatically stop again.

Going to run an Avast scan now.

    And?

Nada!!! I am currently running what seems like a very through scan from Microsoft's website. I started it at 3:45 am and it still running, some 8 hours later.

You mentioned a full installation disk. Would it not be possible to got to....I can't remember...... F2 or F8 to do a diagnostic work up?

When I ran my anti-virus scan there was a game that it tagged but could not move to chest or delete. I went to uninstall programs and uninstalled it and the machine has not hung yet. I will keep a close eye and report back.

Thank you again for hangin in there with me.

I'm a bit concerned that it won't accept either IE9 or SP1. Summat's up for sure. Any chance of borrowing a win 7 x64 disk from a neighbour or buddy?

    Greetings, texasharper.

Pardon the intrusion. Just wanted to ask if you've used an alternate browser (Firefox, K-Melon, etc.) as a troubleshooting step? Might give you some info about whether this is strictly an IE problem or if there may be other issues going on.

  19. texasharper

    texasharper Corporal

No intrusion at all. Should I install Firefox first then uninstall IE8?

Just tried again to install Spk 1 for windows 7 and it failed again. Error code number 80240016.

    Windows Update error 80240016

To correct this error, you'll need to stop and restart a system program. To do this, follow these steps:

Gonna follow these steps an see what I get. Will update shorty.

No need to uninstall IE (in fact, I don't believe you can uninstall IE) - just download and install Firefox. The browser will run independently, and with it you'll be able to see if you have further connection problems or not.

I followed the MS instructions to the tee and Servive pack 1 is still unable to download. Starting to really worry.:confused

You didn't answer my question about borrowing a Win 7 disk - no go? If we can run the system file check we might be able to fix this, but the disk is needed.

@ thefool, nope, the last link you sent me, I really thought would work.

    Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Download size: 73.6 MB - 892.6 MB and IE9 simply will NOT install.

    What do I do now?
    :(

@ Earthling, no I only have recovery disk. I have asked around but to no avail. I think my mom has Windows 7, I will ask her tomorrow. She has a relatively new Toshiba with Windows 7, however, not sure at all what her OS disc options are. Oh, I am mostly using Mozilla Firefox, it is much better at not freezing up. IE is practically unusable!!

    Please download ProcessExplorer

    • Unzip it to its own folder somewhere you can locate it.
    • Now run procexp.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Let's configure some options first:
    • Click View and select Show Lower Pane. And where it says "Lower Pane View" make sure DLL's is checked.
    • Now click on iexplore.exe.
    • Now also under the View menu choose "Select columns" and put a check mark on "Image Path".
    • Now click on File and then Save As. And save the process list.
    • Post it back here as an attachment.

Ok, thisisu, I think I did it correctly. I am hoping I attached correctly also.

Are those .nls files supposed to be there? Can you tell from the Process Explorer if my machine has a virus? I run scans periodically but Avast always reports clean. Please tell me if I am being annoying. :-o

I'm actually learning how to analyze these ProcessExplorer logs myself, so I'm not sure what is valid or not. I just highlighted the entries I found that may be malware related. I won't know until I know what's actually inside those folders. I think they are subdirectories of your C:\Program Data Folder.

I understand that you have Avast!, but you may want to work your way through this thread, just to be certain.

    1. Yes, Globalization/locale files.
    2. Sometimes, this one looks clean to me - but if you suspect something, see the post immediately before this.
    3. Usually a good sign but see #2 above ;).
    4. Not yet ... :-D

The {xxx ... xxx} db strings look normal, some are identical to the 3 in my log/computer.

For comparative purposes, I've attached the PE dll list for IE9 on my W7x64, it's a leaner than standard IE in some ways. I've also set the dll's section in PE to show some more useful data too.

Ok, the original issue is......I can't update. What's up with that? Is that a particular trait of some current malware or something I (or possibly my children) have mistakenly caused in our ignorance?

I am not looking forward to the long and laborious READ & RUN ME FIRST procedure. Does nothing else (simpler)come to mind as to why my machine refuses to update?

I really do appreciate all the helpful suggestions.

Malware has the ability to tamper with Windows update features. It's happened before.

If you want to try something more simple, try the following:
Copy and paste the following Code into a Text Document. save it as: reset windows update history.bat

    Code:
    net stop wuauserv
    rmdir %windir%\softwaredistribution /s /q
    rmdir %windir%\system32\softwaredistribution /s /q
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s atl.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    net start wuauserv
    cls
echo Reboot for changes to occur
    pause >nul
You have to save it as a .bat file. Run the .bat file after creating it, see if Windows update issue is resolved.
