I feel so discouraged and stuck...

I am running Windows XP with automatic updates; IE with automatic updates; and "had" several protective programs, some suggested by people in this forum and worked beautifully.

My protective programs are confusing me now and I think one of them messed up one of the others, i.e. Avast vs. Spybot S&D.

    My protective programs are/were:
    1. Avast Antivirus (automatic update, last update yesterday which found 2 trojans and when I let it take care of them, caused Spybot S&D not to function)...Still running.

    2. Spybot S&D (This appeared to be working beautifully until last Avast update. Now it will not function at all. I ended up removing it from Control Center and deleting all its files.) Wondering if I should get it again.

    3. SpywareBlaster (Never know it's around; so not sure if it is doing what it is suppose to; but have not had any problems with it. Have no idea if Avast disrupted its function in someway.)... Shortcut still shows at bottom of screen.

    4. WinPatrol (Scotty has been guarding for over a year now and I have not had any problems with it. It has at times let me know if something changes and gives me the option of permitting the change or not, which I like.)...still running.

I am probably the most confused person in this forum about computers; thus, my need for "concrete" (real, real clear) instructions as to what to do.

Question: Don't I need Spybot S&D back? If so, how do I keep Avast from destroying it again?

I am so very grateful you computer geeks are here and are kind enough to help people like me. Thank you.

I personally stopped using SpyBot S&D a long time ago.
Avast! is well known for locating "threats" which turn out to be just a faslse positive so you have to be very careful what you allow it to delete.

I wouldn't bother with S&D, I just use the free versions of SUPERantispyware and Malware Bytes.

This is just MY opinion you understand, but I wouldn't bother with it, no. If you do decide to download it again, then make sure you do so from a safe source such as Majorgeeks.com ;) and if Avast! complains again, you will know then that it is indeed a false positive as ALL our files are thoroughly tested before being hosted for download to the public.

If you don't intend to work thru this process then any other questions you have regarding avast! should be asked in the software forum :)

Do you still require any assistance?

I have decided not to download Spybot S&D again. Thus Avast is not finding any problems atm; so I guess I don't need any more help at this time relative to protective programs.

    Thank you all for helping.
