As you may know, I love wine. But I don't have a wine celler, so I bought one! It holds 12 bottles of wine, and is under $100! Soon, I can buy a nice Burgundy and lay it down for a few years! Fred will be very happy when this box is in my house! http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4408108

Got a PayPal thing that should give me $20 bucks back on it as well. :-D

Not big on the big box stores, but I will buy when the price is right!

    Unfair!

Then again, I don't usually manage to leave wine alone long enough to need a cellar for it LOL

    hey, looks good.
just bear in mind that keeping a wine too cool (drinking temp) for too long will make the cork shrink, allowing air to get into your wine and spoil it!

Yes, too cool is bad, but constant temp change is worse if you want to age one for a while. I am pretty sure you can set these to 55 to 60F.

We opened a 1999 Burgandy the other evening at work, that sucker had some tannins. Could use a few more years in the rack! It was drinkable, but way too young.

I am kinda curious how long I can leave a bottle in the cooler... ;)

We have a built in wine cooler in our kitchen, Fred. They are great. We keep the bulk of our wine in our cellar and then have some upstairs. We drink red wine so ours is set to about 65-ish and have never had a problem with keeping the wine in there for a while.

    Enjoy.

I guess I should say how long I can keep it in there before I get thirsty and open it up! :-D My plan is to just buy a couple of bottles to age, and just store my regular wines in it as well. Maybe a bottle that needs just a year or two, and a bottle that needs 5-10 years.

Were you into wine before you went to work with it?

I had a couple of 52 bottle units I purchased from Home Depot several years ago for about $150 each. I kept the one for reds at about 53°, and the other for whites at about 45°. At some point, I acquired a unit that holds between 600-700 bottles. I am also, like Fred, in LA, and have gone thru two brief periods now, in 2005 and 2008, of power outages ranging between 3 and 12 days. I have found none of my wines, laid down since the mid-nineties, and including vintages as far back as 1988, to have suffered any notable deleterious effects. I do not find wines so-stored to have manifested any shrinking corks, but I do notice that the oldest bottles I open sometimes have corks that are somewhat dried out and split or crumble upon pulling-- the rewards have, so far, outweighed the nuisance. In reality, 600-700 bottles are probably too much for most people, but, for anyone interested in holding wine to maturity, I would recommend at least the capacity (and the patience) to hold 5 or more cases for at least 5-7 years to experience the rewards that cellaring can offer.

700 bottles! Wow, I bow to your dedication to wine.:wine I really was not planning on getting one, just couldn't pass it up for around $70. I plan on just buying a few bottles a year, and in a few years I should have a nice bottle on hand for special occaisions.

A little further down the road I may have to PM you for some buying tips TheDoug, if you don't mind.
