    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please read the sticky threads and do not post any logs inline with message. Also HijackThis logs are not accepeted until standard cleaning procedures are follow as given below. Also HijackThis MUST be installed properly.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
    .

Thanks for the instructions. I just finished the step-by-step. Everything went well except the Panda ActiveScan. It ran and said there were no problems but would not show a "see report" or "save report" link.

    I'm attaching the bdscan.txt and HijackThis.log...

Please follow the directions in step 7 of the READ & RUN ME exactly. You installed HijackThis as below:

    C:\Documents and Settings\J.F. Taylor\My Documents\ZShuttle\Downloads\HijackThis.exe

This is one of the places we specify not to install it. Please correct this before you continue on to the below directions.

Is you copy of Spy Sweeper a free trial version or a paid version?

Look in Add/Remove progams for SpyKiller and uninstall if found. If not found, don't worry about it because my below instructions will remove it anyway.

Why are you still running Microsoft Java? It is not even supported anymore and is full of security holes. When we finish cleaning your PC, I will give you a link to use to help get you better protected and it will contain steps to remove MS Java and install Sun Java.

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of FSMl32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the FSMl32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of FSMl32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9b17fc51-8ffc-4187-b738-f92510f9dca8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\FSMl32.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: FSMl32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FSMl32.dll

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop.
Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"
Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK! This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the Enter key.
    del %windir%\temp\win*.*
    exit

    Now run Pocket Killbox:
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FSMl32.dll

If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Also make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry about the HijackThis. I had already installed it when I got to you guys. Sorry, I don't know anything about the difference between MS Java and Sun Java. Spy Sweeper is paid. I'm going to get started now on your instructions. Thanks for helping an old man...

Again, thanks for your help. I followed your instructions and everything seemed to go okay. I have attached the HJT log.

On second thought, it looks like you may just be running an older version of Sun Java. We will check in a moment. First since your Spy Sweeper version is a paid version, please uninstall Windows Defender since we have scanned with it, we no longer need it and it can conflict with Spy Sweeper.

Let's get an installed programs list from HijackThis!
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, to save it to a file where you can find it.
    • Attach the uninstall_list.txt file to your next message.

This will show me what Sun Java version you are running.

Looks like we removed your malware. Is everything working OK?

Thanks to you, everything seems to be running very well now.

I have uninstalled Windows Defender. Early in the process, when I was in the add/remove programs stuff i noticed that I had:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 and
    Java Media Framework 2.1.1e.
I deleted updates 4 and 2 and left Java Media Framework 2.1.1e alone because I didn't know what it was.

    I have attached uninstall_list.txt.

Thanks again for all your help!

    It is this: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/

You can leave it but you may not even use it.

You did not follow the directions in the READ ME that tell you to click on links we give you to make sure you are using the correct version of software and that you have all updates. You are running this:

    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3

This version of Spybot has not been used in more than a year. Uninstall it and download, install, and update the one specified in the READ ME.

    How are things working now?

Everything is looking pretty good! No WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 pop-ups or any of its malicious friends. I deleted the unused Java program and the SpyBot S&D 1.3, and downloaded the SpyBot S&D 1.4. Thanks again for helping an old man who is confused by much of this.

You're welcome. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

Done (disable & re-enable System Restore) and done (How to Protect yourself from malware!)!!! Thank you for everything! I'm still not really sure how I got the WinAntiVirus and associated stuff. This thing runs all the time and my wife and kids (when they're in town) just sitdown and start using it when I'm not. Anyway, I printed out and saved all the instructions from this process so, God forbid, I'll have them if this ever happens again. And again, thank you!

You're welcome! And take a quick look at step 9 which I just added to today. Since you have kids, this should be of concern to you. Create user accounts for your kids and wife and make them Restricted User Accounts.

    Surf safely!
