i don't understand the communication industry. therein lies the rub (what the hell does that actually mean?). it costs a lot, that much i know! OK> ......now ...(i don't even know how to explain!)....i have :-
    1. a home phone....$25.50.......Hawaiian telecom. (not including international)
    2. DSL internet connection.......$34.50.....hawaiian telecom.
    3. two cell phones.....$68.00......1,000 shared mins, unlimited w/e and nights. (and one of them doesn't work!)..... verizon
    4. cable tv.......... $43.50........76 channels (and nothing on any of them!)..........ocianic cable

so my communication bill is $171.50 per month.

there has to be an easier way than this!
so...what is all this about digital? i REALLY don't understand which bit of copper wire they are now referring to.

    Hawaiian telecon is offering
unlimited high speed, broadband (?), DSL access.
    wireless(?), WiFi(?), router/modem(?).
    self installation kit(???)
    McFee internet security Suite(?)
two wireless phones when you sign up for hi. telecom wireless service.

    $29.95 a month

does this mean that whatever it is they are offering, covers my home phone, internet and cell phones ?

help my understand what my choices are. (in baby language please :) )

    much aloha

The first part is pretty clear. They're offering DSL (which you already have) for your whole house, assuming you've got more than one computer that needs internet access. The WIFI router/modem is a wireless router for setting up a home network, so more than one computer can use the DSL connection.

The two wireless phones are more nebulous. 2 standard cordless phones as a signing bonus? VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phones to replace your house phones? Not too likely, as most phone companies HATE VOIP.

The cheaper price may be a short term offer, or it may be for a slower connection speed than you've got. These days they offer different speed levels at different prices.

Easiest way to clear it up is to call them.

ok, i get it. thanks GT.the offer is simply on a different DSL, same price. the're not giving away cell phones at all and it all has nothing to do with the house phone. the key phrase is 'when you sign up for'. i still dont understand the difference between the dsl i have, and this one. now hi.tel. have a cell phone provider. i will call them on mon to check prices.

i still think there should be a way of incorperating all these elements into one package.
why do most phone co.s hate voip????

does 'digital' mean the same as 'wireless'

jusplaying.....i would LOVE to live like that.

Should be, but that's more a marketing decision for the phone company as to how they package things. Cell phone, house phone, and computer are all different technologies, although phone companies are trying hard to sell you all of them.
Because they're losing business, particularly on long distance, to other companies that aren't in the traditional phone business at all.
No. While all computer data is transferred as digital signals (stream of ones and zeroes) whether wireless or over a wired network, wireless simply means a radio or infrared broadcast signal, and can be either analog or digital, depending on what type of equipment you're talking about. First generation cordless house phones and cell phones were analog. Newer ones are digital. Both are wireless.

thankyou tabasco. and no they dont operate in hawaii!! which is a shame because it sounds good. i have to move soon, and i am gonna lose my phone etc. we are thinking about satalite/digital (cable?). i am assuming we can get a high speed internet on that. there might be other voip operaters in this state.

I know alot of broadband providers(particularely cable) are trying to give package deals when you get more than one service form them. I get cable internet and TV from one company and they also offer VOIP phone service but so far I havent been tempted to switch phone service over.
when you move though you should see if wherever you get cable TV from offers cable internet too...might save you a few bucks and also it's one less bill.

i'm not gonna be able to get cable as such, but satelite, or 'digital', or 'direct', or whatever. i can bring a phone line in, but if i can get internet and voip on whatever we can get the telly on.. (are you following this?) then i might do that. we will have no electric for a while, so first we have to set up a solar system. (well first we have to dig a cess pit!! put in a toilet, shower, etc.!) should be fun eh?

Goodness, it doesn't sound like you're anywhere near anything! :p Can you get broadband internet? Cable providers usually carry cable internet (broadband) service. If you can get cable internet, you can probably get VoIP--I know SunRocket's expanding constantly, so if you like them and aren't intent on getting it set up right this second, I'd keep an eye on their site to see if they become available in your area. I know they've just recently expanded into a number of places they weren't in before, so I think it's only a matter of time.

i dont think i can get 'cable' cable. i think its got to be the satelite thingy. but they give you internet as well, dont they???

AFAIK, high-speed Internet over satellite is extemely expensive.

I don't think the satellite TV providers even provide Internet access. In my area, our LEC (Verizon) is trying to bundle phone, DSL and satellite TV. They've partnered up with DirecTV to offer a discount if you get the whole package. It's all part of the war between Verizon and Comcast going on in this area.

Verizon is running fiber to the premesis and is now offereing FIOS to business and residential areas for only a few dollars more than Comcast charges for 4 Mb/s service.

Verizon is soon going to offer Cable TV. Thats going to be interesting. We seriously need some competition as far as cable providers.

Anyway, you might want to try GSM from T-Mobile or Cingular, if it's available in your area. It's a little slow compared to broadband, and between $50 and $100 depending on where you are, but is still cheaper than satellite Internet.

Either that or make some sock puppets and do little puppet shows for entertainment. You can re-enact scenes from old movies!
