I have a network card to install for ethernet but the system tells it already has 'better drivers' and refuses to install from the original cd for the NIC.

I have disabled all things under the NIC in device manager.
I have a copy of 98SE but it isn't liking the disc, it isn't 'finding' the file(s) the unit seems to think it needs... :cry :-D rolleyes
anyone have a point or two? :cool

    thanks...
    Robert

Depending on the NIC you have, even Win98 had many drivers built in. If you allow Win98 to install it's native driver, does the NIC not work?

Re USB and as has already been stated NUSB will work great. After install, it will display the eject button in the systray (just like XP) when an item is connected.

I use it and it has so far detected all that I have connected, to include usb thumb drives, digital cameras, external USB HDDs, ipods, USB hubs, etc...

If your board has usb2.0 capabilities and you have already installed the usb2.0 chipset driver then NUSB v2.4e is fine and is all that is required. If your mobo does not have USB2.0 drivers then use v3.3 which will add them. Alternatively, install the USB2.0 drivers and NUSB 2.4e (that is the one I use as I already had USB2.0 drivers installed). Here is a link please read the instructions first.

As regards your NIC prob about the only thing to suggest is to uninstall whatever NIC drivers are their at the moment and try again. What make / model of card is it?

I have 98SE working without issues with an Edimax EW-7128G (Ralink chipset) and to boot it also uses WPA encryption (since 98SE does not natively support WPA). The Edimax cd provides the Aegis5 protocol drivers so that the card is no longer shackled to only WEP (assuming your router has that capability. Previously to the Edimax, I was using a Netgear MA311 'b' protocol.

USB is working now. Installed several option above including the driver from the usb manufacturer. Everything worked after the usb driver from manufacturer and then nusb.

As for the NIC card, I was wanting it to reach the Internet to download things but the USB is rockin' now. The pc will reach any Internet via phone modem.
