I have a problem..

Which is, i no longer get the windows(xp sp2) start up sound or shut down, trash being emptied, etc. ALL other sound works. baffling. this happens on 2 systems that I have.
os= WinXP sp2
gigbyte MB
Nvidiia card
1gb ram
linksys router
problem occured after running avg free, adawareSE, spybot. did system restore and sound returned(both systems) now sound gone again. I need help solving this. Other than start up and shut down and other os sounds, sound works fine

Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Sounds tab --> Select "Windows Default" from the drop down menu --> OK.

Go to the link below and scroll down to line 211 Restore Startup and Shutdown Sounds. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Actually, chances are there is a corrupt registry entry. I'm going to post two regedit screenshots. One that is corrupted, one that isn't.

First the corrupted one:

 

How it should actually look:

 

This will break sound events, but nothing else.

On the right hand side, on the highlighted value, you need to first export it, to back it up, then delete it. It will rebuild immediately. Just delete the value on the right hand side, nothing else!!!

Reboot and it should start working again.

 

this will sound dumb, but needs to be asked...how do i get to the registry?

 

Start, run, regedit.

 

Found it, and will look, dont feel comfortable with the registry, but will look and report back with findings, thansk

Glad to see you are fixed. Hopefully, this cures some of your registry phobia, too.

 

Still shaky but better for the experience

 

No worries, break it a few times and you will feel right at home

 

the phobia is from W95 and W98, i am making a transistion to linux, to start new phobias
