I have a virus ping .exe My husband is going to kill me.

    Ok guys I am pretty computer savoy but this has me stumped. I am trying to get this fixed before my husband comes home, because I am sure he will flip out. He is always telling me to get off his computer when searching for coupons and stuff for shopping. His computer is faster then my old piece of junk.

    Anyway I have this ping exe issue and a redirection of web pages. The exe just runs in the processes. Uggg. My girlfriend is here and is trying to help. She suggested to post here.

    I hope you guys can help me. I dont know what to scan because the links are confusing. I downloaded a few of the programs suggested and can get logs. Please tell me what to do.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

    Please follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide


    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.



    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:


    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:


    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    OK I ran this so far I am going step by step...Oh god..... I could tell this will be difficult.

    Thanks for your help so far. I hope something will get rid of this. I am reading carefully so I dont miss anysteps and want to make sure the attachments are working.

    Here is the malewarebytes log. Found two threats. I am rebooting. Be right back.

    How am I doing? Husband not home until late so I have time to get this fixed. I hope I dont screw this up. My girlfriend and I are having a few cocktails......;)

    OK, also it says I should not run combifix unless asked to do so. So I will wait on that. On to the next item.

    Note: The ping.exe has not popped up lately. Could it be gone?

    So please do so.

    Maybe not such a good idea then. Heh. Perhaps wait until morning to undertake malware removal, as we would not want any mistakes to be made, neither would your husband I am sure.

    You need to run everything and THEN make one post to attach everything. Do not keep making post after post as this is going to put you back right to the back of the queue.
    Yes, please run Combofix, we want you to.


    TimW will be back on line Tuesday evening so just attach the other requested logs and await further instruction then from him.

    I did state that it was not an option. So now what?

    Oh geesh!!! We are fine, trust me...LOL. No mistakes on this end.

    Thats a bit confusing and I thought I was doing a good job posting the logs.... So I will gather up all the logs in my previous posts and combine them???? Does not make sense but if thats what it will take to help me then I will.

    So no one else can help to tomorrow? Ok I will stop right here then. No sense running anything else if it is not accomplishing anything.

    I guess there are a lot of people asking for assistance then.

    Yes it will be, all the logs will be ready for TimW to review as a complete set. If you wait until tomorrow, it will take even longer no doubt.

    Yes there are. If you look through the forum you will see for yourself. There is a paticularly horrible new wave of infections in the wild that we have been having to put alot of focus into. You are just one of many people in the list. A wait time like I described to you is normal. I have a whole bunch of threads now where people are patiently waiting their turn.

    We are volunteers you see, and have to do this in between working regular jobs. Some malware removal forums keep people waiting three days, depending on how busy it is at the time. You should relax though knowing you are in very good hands here at Majorgeeks. Thanks for understanding.

    OK what else is needed?

    I ran that combofix a couple of days ago and am afraid to run it again.

    I had no internet after running it. I tried all the winsock reset stuff etc... to no avail. Had to do a repair of windows to get it back. Tried the auto DNS, and any and everything I could find on this site to get it back and nothing worked.

    So it seems I dont have this ping.exe anymore, and I am wondering what fixed it.

    So here is the last combofix log I can find.

    I am sorry I posted everthing sporatically.

    From running MGTools.exe --- we need to see the MGlogs.zip. Please attach that too. Then Tim will review these logs when he gets in later on.

    Yes Kestrel13! already told you that the log from MGtools was needed
    You also need to rerun TDSSkiller as TimW requested and quanantine the TDSS files. Tim dis say the below which indicates to use either cure OR quarantine.
    Since you could not cure, you should have used quarantine.

    OK MG tools log and Tdsskiller.

    I quarantined all 8 threats in TDSS. It only gave the option to copy to quarantine.

    I am going to delete the other files you suggest.

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

    See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):


    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )


    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    NO!!!! You quarantined more than you should have. Only the below TDSS related items should have been quarantined. The other items are required for your PC to function properly.

    OK here is the Avenger file. Just a note I deleted the other files you suggested previously.

    And MGlogs zip log.

    Now what is chaslang telling me I did wrong? What should I do?


    Also everything has been running good since I uses some of the downloads yesterday, and is all good today.

    Is there anything else I should do?

    You should only have quarantined those items I told you about. You can go to C:\TDSSKiller_Quarantine and un-quarantine all the items except those that Chas mentioned.

    Otherwise, your logs are clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.


    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    I went there and there are 4 folders but it dont say how to un quarantine them. I dont what to just delete them

    I performed all other remove functions you descibed to uninstall some of the downloads.

    I want to thank you for all your help so far and I guess I am done here except those tdss files.
