I am a total newbie at much of the techie end of
my computer, so please have patience with me.
My problem started with toolbar188, I think I got rid of that.. I also had something that puts icons on my desktop that are labeled "SECURITY TROUBLESHOOTING" & "ONLINE SECURITY GUIDE". It also put these in the start button menu. I deleted all of those manually. But there was still some popups, and then the icons came back along with a new homepage "uptodateprotection.com". Before finding your site, I ran adaware,
Spybot, Ashampoo, Trend PC cillion, etc. I tried everything I could think of short of reformatting. I wanted to try to avoid that because I just had a hard drive die on me
3 weeks ago. Then, thank God, I found your site.
I went through Add/Remove Programs and did not find any from your list.
I emptied all quarantine lists on Anti spyware and Anti virus programs.
I did all the steps mentioned in the READ & RUN ME FIRST Topic.
I saw Spybot and CounterSpy cleaner
supposedly delete a lot of nasty bugs.
I now have Trend blocking the uptodateprotection pages that kept coming up. But a few of the pop ups creep through. I have had to reboot after every download and installation,
because something was freezing up the computer. I am at my wits end with this. I need
a techie knight in shining armor to help. I will attach the logs I have run and you asked for.

First goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below old versions of software:
    eTrust Antivirus Registration
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Now download two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of ssttr.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the ssttr.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    winqxe32.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of ssttr.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    winqxe32.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ezanga.com/
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2919D9A1-A68A-4BD7-8577-F8E137FDDFAC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssttr.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {315A24EC-323F-85DF-F959-090CDAC89FFD} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vvfqbke.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5CDBDA78-A5DF-25F0-0F98-0720D1D33E23} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mgfvesm.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vvfqbke.dll] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\vvfqbke.dll,uzreaxd
    O4 - Startup: .protected
    O4 - Global Startup: .protected
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssttr - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssttr.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winqxe32 - winqxe32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK! This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the Enter key.
    del %windir%\temp\win*.*
    exit

If you get an error message while doing the above command prompt step, just ignore it and continue!

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
Now back on Killbox's main window, Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.

    D:\OLD\To\Inf\nsupd9x.inf
    D:\WinME\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert_InstallSilent.inf
    C:\.protected
    c:\windows\system32\dial23.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ismini.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\issssssearch.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vvfqbke.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.ini2

If Killbox does not reboot or if you get a Pending Operations type error message just click OK to continue and then just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete it if found:
    D:\WinME\Program Files\LimeShop

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Lady Crimson\Local Settings\Temp

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Also attach a new log from ShowNew and a new log from GetRunKey.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

chaslang, you are my hero!!!! I waited a couple of hours after the fixes, and no pop-ups, no more redirecting my homepage, and my web pages are actually loading up 3 x as fast as they used to. I am breathing a big sigh of relief. I have attached the logs you have requested. Hopefully nothing else will
be showing up. Thanks again for all your help!

You're welcome, but we have a little more to do!

First shutdown all of your protection software (Ashampoo etc)! It may be blocking some of the fixes. Then continue.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7672BAF-E9A3-49B6-86B2-C81719A18A4C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fekiagfj.dll
    O4 - Startup: .protected
    O4 - Global Startup: .protected

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fekiagfj.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Lady Crimson\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected

If Killbox does not reboot or if you get a Pending Operations type error message just click OK to continue and then just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot attach new logs from:
    - HJT
    - ShowNew.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
