I keep my computer free from any personal information. I have a super small nlited xp install, no IE messenger ect. It's just me Firefox, process explorer, and Hijackthis. Today I watched this video.

YouTube video:How to remove Viruses and Spyware manually - Part 1 of 2

I never seem to get infected unless I do it on purpose. Sometimes I download something like awsomesong.mp3.exe 67kb just to do battle. The guy in the video brings up a point if malware is not doing anything (process explorer) its not harmful. So my question is--is he right? If you don't see the malware doing anything in process explorer and has no links to the registry in Hijackthis, is it "unharmful"?

    No!

This is a totally incomplete and insufficient view of malware and will not work for most real malware that is around these days. HijackThis and ProcessExplorer will not even see most of the malware that runs on PCs these days. In addition, there are many cases where you will not even be able to use cacls to change permissions even if you can locate the processes and files related to them.

We have used cacls in the past where it may have been useful and this is nothing new nor is it any new invention by this person, but using only it and HijackThis as a set of proposed removals tools is simply a joke.

Please do not post anymore of these absurd links to youtube.

I've been doing this for a long with no problems. I know this ain't gonna work for most people.

I didn't know it was absurd. I'm just trying to learn something.

I kinda lied in the title I did have Norton AV in the 90s for a very short time. I've never used AV software again. It is worst then being infected.

Then just consider yourself extremely lucky, and hopefully neither you or anyone else uses this PC for anything financial related and also you don't have any important information on it that you don't mind possibly loosing.

You can learn alot more real malware removal procedures by reading the threads here. ;)
