i have no sound at all

Hi, I did a re-install of windows xp, did not delete partition just re-installed windows xp because i had a problem. Everything was fine after that, then i installed service pack 2 and i lost my cd rom and dvd rom drives and my sound. I uninstalled service pack 2, and my cd/dvd rom drives re-appeared. But I still have no sound. I have been searching for answers everywhere, but no luck. I have uninstalled the driver, reinstalled. When i double-click on the icon in my system tray, it says "digital output is taken by another application" and in device manager soundmax properties it says, "device is enabled but has not been started". Please help if you can, it's driving me nuts!!! Thank you !!
