Hi, I just bought a bargain Dell for about $100. Here's the description from the order. 1 x Dell Optiplex Tower PC - Intel HT 2.8GHz, 1GB DDR2, 40GB HDD, CD 2 GB Memory Keyboard & Mouse - Included. I thought it was a great deal, and I hope it's not too good to be true. It has Windows XP, which is why I wanted it. It's been fine, and I downloaded Avira virus protection from MajorGeeks as soon as I got on-line.

But when I go to hook up my cheapie plug 'n play webcam or my all-in-one printer, I have problems. First, let me say that I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389#check1
to see if I have Svc Pack 3, and it says:
    MicroSoft Windows
    Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_gdr.101209-1647: Service Pack 3)
    Copyright 2007 MicroSoft Corporation

When I try to hook up my webcam, I get a box with this:
The file "kstvtune.ax" on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

    Copy file from C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

When I try to hook up my Canon Pixma MP460 all-in-one, I get a box with:

The file "usbscan.sys" on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy file from C:\ProgramFiles\CanonBJ\lJPrinter\CanonMP460\i386"[/B] (I'm not sure if it's a lower case L, a number 1, or an upper case I before the JPrinter.)

The only other thing I did before trying to set up the printer is download Skype - could that be it? I've removed Skype since then, just to see if that would help, but it doesn't.

Please help! What am I doing wrong?!! :cry

    Find this c:\windows\driver cache\i386
I have a sp3 cab file. Point the installer to the path
    c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp3.cab

Both of the files you need are in the cab file.

Note: I am running XP Home, not XP Pro on the computer I looked at for these files.

Thank you so much for your reply, but I am a complete boob about this stuff. (Yes, I'm blond!) I'm not sure what you mean by "find." I did Search on the Start Menu, and came up with c:\windows\driver cache\i386 but was unable to find c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp3.cab But I'm not sure how I can get that info onto the installer window anyway. When I pull down the menu in the bottom part of the window (where it says Copy file from C:\\ etc., there is only something like D:

BTW, Happy 4th of July, and thanks again!

    kstvtune.ax should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32

and usbscan.sys should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Do you see those files in their respective directories?

If not, go to C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. Are the above files in the i386 directory? If yes copy the files to the appropriate directory.

Do you know how to use Windows Explorer (Start | Programs | Accessories | Explorer)?

Navigate to that location (under My Computer | C: ...), then double-click on that sp3.cab file. Extract the two files using drag-and-drop, e.g. to the i386 folder.

Thank you all so much! After transferring about a dozen files from C:\i386/SP3.CAB to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, I finally have my webcam working! And no, I didn't know how to use Windows Explorer (Start | Programs | Accessories | Explorer, so that's a whole new skill for me.

Since it is after 2AM here, I'll work on the all-in-one printer/scanner tomorrow. I may be back here with more questions, because I don't have any idea what I'm doing! But your directions worked, and I'm so grateful to all of you!

I think the quickest and easiest way to start Windows Explorer is with the keyboard:

    WinKey + E

The WinKey (Windows key) is the one with the Windows logo flag on it, between the (left) Ctrl key and Alt key.

I did it! My printer is WORKING!

Thank you all so much, especially for your patience with me. (I never realized I knew so little.) You guys are awesome and should surely get some good Karma for all you do. Thanks a million!

Unbelievable; I have been working with computers for decades, and I never knew that! (Of course the Windows key is a relatively new development; I still have some keyboards without a Windows key.)
