Just days ago, my sound stopped working. I did all the troubleshooting steps but nothing works. I downloaded and installed a new sound driver from DriverMax but there's still no sound.

I'm working on Windows XP and downloaded a new version of Intel(r)82801AA AC'97 Audio controller, which did not fix the problem.

Does anyone know what I can do?

It is possible that the audio on your board has failed.
Do you or can you get a plug in card to try?

What is a plug in card? I have an old computer that i'm not using anymore. Would that have a plug in card?

The older computer may have a plug-in card, but you'd still have to download and install drivers. I think that jumping to the conclusion that the on-board sound has died is WAY premature especially since we have no idea what your motherboard make is or your PC make or model, or even the sound chip make and model. Besides, DriverMax isn't really a strongly recommended source for drivers. So, please attach an Everest report to a future post by following the steps in this thread. Once we have the Everest report, we can see what your hardware is and probably get the correct driver.

Here is the report. I hope this helps.

When you say you tried all the troubleshooting steps, you are saying you checked inside control panel and made sure that the sound isn't off? Device manager and make sure it's enabled? Not trying to offend, but I oftentimes see the phrase "Tried all troubleshooting steps" but really they haven't. It's understandable when you are frustrated with computer issues.

And this is the driver you downloaded?

Edit: I may have found a more recent file here.

Of the 2 links above, the first requires you to create an account and log in, and the 2nd has no actual "Download" button that I could find. The only download button is for downloading Driver Detective which is a 3rd party paid program and probably not really needed (or recommended). I did some research and it looks like the system uses either a RealTek driver; download from this link, or an ADI SoundMax driver; download from this link or from this link. The 2nd ADI driver says 'Win98' but it includes a Win2000 driver which should work for XP if it's installed through the Device Manager and the New Hardware Wizard. Be sure to install the chipset drivers first if you haven't already. You can download them from this link.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

(if none of the sound drivers work, please post the full model of the PC; I see in the Everest report that it's a Compaq Deskpro, but the model number is needed; also including a FULL Everest report would be helpful too, it looks like the one above has been edited)

Thank you so much for all the help. I'm working overtime right now so I won't be able to work on my computer until late in the night. I'll let you know my progress tomorrow.

    Thanks again.

I tried to download the two audio drivers but the first download made my computer start over and the second refused to install because I didn't have the driver on my computer. Is there something else I can do?

Here is my full report from EVEREST.

It's asking me to update windows from a Microsoft site. Should I do it first?

Just did it, still no luck. I checked device manager and the USB Universal Host Controller is working perfectly.

I was wondering if it would be good idea to uninstall the sound drivers and try to install them again? Would that hurt my computer or is that a good idea?

Also, a few days before the sound stopped my flashplayer stopped working unexpectedly and I had to uninstall and then reinatall it. Could that have something to do with the problem? I'm completely lost.

I posted this link to a sound driver earlier and recommended that it be install via the Device Manager/Hardware Wizard and to use the Win2000 driver included in the download. I'm going to assume you just tried to launch the setup.exe. So, uninstall any sound driver that is currently installed. Restart the PC when it's uninstalled. If the New Hardware Wizard opens, cancel it for now. Download and install TUGzip. TUGzip can extract RAR files, ZIP files, 7zip files, many EXE files, and just about any archive or self-extracting archive you're likely to encounter. When installing TUGzip just click 'Next' all the way through. At the end of the install, there will be a little check-box for "Launch TUGzip"; go ahead and launch it; click "Next" all the way through again until you see a "Finish" button; there will be a column on the left side with a bunch of different archive formats; click the "Select All" button; click "Finish". A window will open that looks like an Explorer-type window, close it. Right click the file you downloaded (the file you want to extract) and click the 2nd upward pointing green arrow, it will say something like "Extract to: .\filename" and the file will extract to a folder of the same name. So you'd end up with a folder called "sp21180" on your desktop. So now you'll follow the steps in this thread to install the sound driver via the Device Manager and Hardware Wizard. In step 6 in that thread, you'd browse to the "sp21180" folder and go to "SMAXWDM" then to "W2K". The driver should install... if you get any warnings, select 'install anyway' or whatever the choice is to continue. If it doesn't work, PLEASE post the full model number of the Deskpro PC. If it isn't plainly shown on the front of the PC, there should be a sticker (or something) on the back (or bottom) of the PC with some type of information. Even if this info seems abstract and/or worthless, please post it as it may lead us to the correct driver.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. My computer died on me. I got it running again but still no sound.

Sorry that I didn't post the model number earlier. I didn't know where it was located. I found the sticker underneath. There are two sets of numbers but I don't know which one is the right one.

The first number is: - REMOVED WINDOWS KEY -

The 2nd number is: - REMOVED - NOT SURE -

There is also a serial number.

    The number is: 6121 FR4Z D296

    I hope this can help.

Looks like you found the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) numbers for your copy of Windows,or at least what was on it at one time.
The second set of numbers is an OEM instead of OBM as stated. OEM version of Windows.
    Don't know about number 3.

Those were the wrong numbers? I'll keep looking.

I found a sticker on the back with two sets of numbers. I hope these are the ones that I need.

    The first one is: A419733

The second one is either: 5121FR4ZD276

    Or: 6121FR4ZD276

If you can help me I will appreciated it SOO much because I have no idea what to do next.
