I couldn't load windows because it was all of a sudden asking for a password and trying to find a domain (I'm running xp home (sp 3). I was planning on posting a hijack this log, but had to go through the steps listed prior to that. I have having trouble running some of them because I was running in safe mode, but after running combofix, it automatically rebooted my computer and it booted normally. THANK U THANK U THANK U. We all depend and rely on our computers so much and often don't realize it till it's too late. Just another wake up call to do those damn backups.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    You're welcome.

Are you having any malware problems?

Not that I know of, anymore. Although, in trying to "cure" my machine I had tried restore points and restored to about a month ago, with no benefit. So, after I got rid of the malware and was able to actually boot my machine normally, I decided to restore back to just prior to having problems. Wouldn't cha know it, I reloaded the malware. Had to repeat some of the scans, but at least this time, I knew what to do to eradicate the problem. I have a couple new malware programs (the things major geek instructed me to download and run), so I'll try and stay on top of it... not bad since this is the first virus I've had (at least that I've known about).

Okay then you should work thru the below.

First if you have not already done so, delete your old restore points by toggling System Restore as mentioned in the READ & RUN ME.

Now work thru the below link:

On a side note... aawservice.exe keeps showing up in task manager even after I kill it. I looked at adaware and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to tell it to not start at start up and in startup cpl, adaware isn't even listed. When I kill it, it reappears in a couple of seconds. How do I get rid of it, short of uninstalling ad aware?

You uninstall Ad-Aware. It is a service that Ad-Aware always has running on your PC. You would be better off uninstalling Ad-Aware and using the free SUPERAntiSpyware which is much much much more effective.

The bastards are getting smarter... same password problem (that no one responded to originally, but I cleared by following the read me first file). Now, however, I can't boot into safe mode (which is how I ran combofix last time and cleared the virus). Any suggestions? I can get to a c prompt, but with limited access to directories (as in "access denied" when I try to change directories).

Maybe I wasn't clear, not only can't I boot into safe mode, if you read previous msgs, I can't boot period. How would you suggest I run the scans you suggest?
