    Hi Geek friends!

Long story short, I was working on a friend's Dell Laptop running XP pro and she didn't just have viruses and malware...we are talking the PLAGUE! Over 27 virus detections and boo-koos of spyware. Okay...cleaned it all up but there was a lingering virus that wasn't detected and removed which means I would have to go into safemode to rid. What's this...safemode won't bootup! Why you *&!!!!!... Okay...well then I'll go into my msconfig and make safemode start! What a dumb move! Now I have'nt been able to get windows to boot due to the "virus command" no safemode and me saying "yes". It tries to boot but just keeps re-booting. CRUD! So, I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to fix this in recovery console. I've already tried to "fix" the XP program with the original disk but it says it's missing a file (ialmddev5.dll) I ran diagnostics and found error code (650f:0244) UNCORRECTABLE DATA ERROR OR MEDIA IS WRITE PROTECTED.

I've already ran FIXMBR ...FIXBOOT and CHKDSK /R

Anyone have any more suggestions .....:confused

I'm basically looking for the command to let me take off the safemode command I had made in msconfig!

    Thanks for any help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

When you use MSconfig to force a PC to boot in safe mode, it modifies the C:\boot.ini file (which is a hidden system file). It adds a parameter like below:

    /safeboot:minimal

    to the [operating systems] section.

Example for normal startup you would see a boot.ini like this
And for safe boot mode it would look like this:
From Recovery Console, you would have to edit the boot.ini file to remove the /safeboot:minimal command. However you cannot simply run an editor in the Recovery Console.

The below procedure using bootcfg is what you will want to do.

More info on the bootcfg command can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q291980/
