Hi i have reciently been doing some research on upgrading my inspiron 8500 GPU to a Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo. I found out that it is possible and all i need now is to get the card. Anyone know a place on the net that gives good prices and ships to Ireland.

    Thanks.

nope, usually the upgrading is done in a factory BEFORE the laptop is delivered to the customer.
laptopvideocards are NOT swappeable like the videocards of desktop pc's are.

In most cases yes but in certain cases you can place some another laptop card into another machine.

In my case i have an inspiron 8500 with a nvidia geforce 4 4200 go 64mb. This is also compatable with the Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo 128mb or the Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb. There are a few small mods that need to be done to the card to prevent overheating but nothing major. Check it out here. http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm

I never thought it was possible either but i did some looking none the less and found that site.

So all i need now is the card and it is proving more difficult than i thought.
Im going to head down to my local electronics store and see if they can order me one.

Id rather get it off the net. It would probably be cheaper.

Check out all laptop GPU upgrade compatably here

In that case the best chance you've got is ordering through the company who imports the things, or go into a pc store and ask them if they can order it for you.

thanks for the links btw :)

don't listen to fleppen....(fleppen FYI: unless your sure you know what your talking about don't reply...everything you've said in this post is complete FUD)

Dell laptops are incredibly modular in all aspects. I (like fleppen) assumed that laptops were some magical device that had very little that could be changed on them. One day when my display started acting up I searched for some info on what the problem might be. (but only after finding out that Dell wanted $550 for the replacement 15" UXGA Ultra Sharp LCD.) I found lots of info online and discovered that most display problems are a result of the LCD inverter and/or ribbon cable that attaches the display to the video card. Neither of these are available from Dell however with out the expensive LCD that goes with it. You can however find a treasure trove of spare parts from deceased laptops on eBay.com. My Inspiron 8200 has 4 officially supported Video cards for it, and many others verified by others online. Almost every component on the Inspiron can be replaced, and often upgraded.

I will be taking my 8200 from a 1.7GHz to 2.6GHz soon, as well as upgrading the video card from a 32MB NVidia one to the much better 64MB Radeon 9000 Mobility. And from what I have found online i can upgrade my mem to 2GB instead of the 1GB Dell claims.

Here is a list of confirmed cards for the 8200:
    NVIDIA Geforce 700gl
    NVIDIA Quadro4 700 Go Gl 64mb
    ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB
    Nvidia Geforce 4 440 Go 64MB
    Nvidia Geforce 4 440 Go 32MB
    Nvidia Geforce 2 Go
    ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 64MB
    ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 64MB

here is a link to a page with complete list of 8200 info. Most of it should apply to 8500 as i think its the same chipset. If anything the 8500 should be able to handle faster and more powerful components...

oh yea...regarding where to get parts.

Dell: They will likely have any part you need, but may only offer it bundled together with cables and other components you don't need. They are also veeeery expensive.
Local PC Store: They probably won't be able to get you the part you need, and if they do you will certainly pay more for it that any other method of obtaining parts.
eBay: Lots of parts available, prices are great, but you may have to hunt around for a few weeks to find the exact part you need. If you see someone selling similar parts email them and ask if they have the part you need. Thats how i found my LCD inverter and got it for $25, with the ribbon cable included. I emailed someone that had posted some Dell LCD parts and got lucky....
