I have an .AVI file that I'd like to split up into several different sections. Basically, I want to take a 54 second clip from here, a 1min 23 second clip from here... etc... without sacrificing quality. Anything out there anyone can recommend?

VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod. Both are stand-alone so unzip the folder and click on the executable file.

Open your movie file. Use the slider to get near the part of the movie you want to split. Use the left gold key button to get to beginning of the desired clip and the skinny left arrow to mark this cut position. Use the right gold key button to find the closest key-frame to the end of the clip and the skinny right arrow to mark it.

Select "Save As" from the File menu. Enter a name for your clip and in the video mode dropdown box select "Direct Stream Copy".

The interface is confusing. Most of the keys are arrow type keys, the "skinny arrows" are the ones on the far right. On some files this will work fine.

    Good Luck! :)

Cutting on key frames is recommended to avoid sound synch problems. You can experiment using non-key frames by using the double arrow (fast-forward/rewind) looking keys to move exactly one frame instead of using key-frames.

I played around with that program last night and it wasn't working for me. It wasn't recognizing any codecs. I think its because I'm running Vista 64. I"ll try run it on my XP laptop tonight to see if that works out for me.

    Thanks!

If you can play the movie in WMP then you have the codecs installed. What do you use to play the avi on vista? It could be that your player has self-contained codecs so the codecs aren't installed system wide.

I'm fairly sure that any editing software will need to have the codec issue resolved before it can work.

On XP use K-Lite codec pack to install a basic set of codecs if VMod still won't work. It will attempt to avoid conflicts when installing.

I use VLC to play my movies on both of my computers. I was able to get everything up and running on my XP laptop. Thanks for the help!
