    Hi,

My dad's Pc is slow .
It has avast without a registration, it won't update and i can't download a new copy as it fails to install (nothing appears), the avast won't remove from the control settings either.

Adaware won't update and the pc is very slow.
It is a winXP ,amd-2400 80mg hd and much software on it..

I don't know what to do becaue it seems a lot easier to reformat the hd and reload the software, than trying to work this all out. The avast wasn't run often to check for viruses.

    help!

If you suspect you are having malware problems then the below are the required steps you need to take.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

My pc is so slow it won't run the online panda, bitdefender and it won't get updates for spybot as i get a socket error.
Spybot only took a few minutes comapred to my smaller pc and no way did it look like it was doing a complete job.

I ran ccleaner and I am going to run a few more things but HELP!

Now this has become critical, what do i do as i can't do all those instructions?

Just complete all steps that you can complete, but just remember that the more logs you give us, the faster/easier time we will have in trying to resolve your problems.

Did you try CounterSpy or AVG AntiSpyware which you can run offline? Are you running scans in safe mode?

How many antivirus programs are installed?

How many realtime spyware blockers (like CounterSpy, Ewido, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor...etc) are installed? And If you have any of these, which ones are paid versions and which are free trials?

Make sure at a minium that you attach logs (from Normal Boot Mode) from GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HijackThis and make sure HijackThis is installed and renamed as requested in step 7.

I ran ccleaner, avg spyware (no updates ), adaware, avast, spybot etc.
I can't get any updates on the sofware as the internet is to slow.
Nothing has had any effect although it did remove some malaware.

I didn't have those spyware apps on. I have spybot, adaaware, ccleaner, avast, avg spyware.
I will get some logs but it looks like i will have to just format the hd and start again.

You problems are not due to malware but you can the below to remove a bunch of startups that are not needed.

First use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Viewpoint Media Player

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_9 -reboot 1
    O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Then reboot and attach a new HJT log.

Let me know if that changed anything.

If things are slow, look in Task Manager and tell me if any processes are using lots of CPU time.

    Hi,

Well I see some InCD which i don't want as I uninstalled this horrible thing.
The firewall sygate doesn't appear anywhere and i can't even bring it up from start. I don't remeber that not appearing so that may be a problem as well.

The firewall was not there. It had been removed somehow and i have no idea how?
Loaded a new 1 and now it works fine.

I'm not sure what you mean! It was installed and it was running according to your logs which showed:

    C:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmcService] C:\PROGRA~1\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe -startgui
    O23 - Service: Sygate Personal Firewall (SmcService) - Sygate Technologies, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe

Did you uninstall it before installing a new one? Note that Uninstall does not mean delete!
