Tried safe mode? Tap the F8 key while computer is booting, choose Safe Mode, go to Start, Accessories, Command Prompt type in chkdsk c:/r That is chkdsk, then a space, then c:/r then hit enter, follow any prompts such as check on next boot answer y, hit enter, then type in exit , hit enter and reboot. I am assuming Windows is installed on C. Later set Automatic Updates to notify but not download or install. When finished updating close without reboot to see which updates were installed, then reboot. There is a Microsoft program called Steady State you may want to look into. Everyone in our home has their own pc, or 2. If they hose it they hose their own. rolleyes

Is there anything else I can do? I try to reboot in each mode at least 3xs. I'm not sure what else to do.

Without a restore disk and a corrupted version of windows you won't be able to get the computer to run. You' either have to contact Gateway, who bought eMachines and see if you can purchase a restore disk or purchase a copy of XP.
If you know your serial number, you might be able to borrow a copy of XP and do a repair inputting your serial number.
