I am running Windows XP Pro. When my Norton’s ran a virus check it showed a worm Win32 Alcra.f and indicated several hundred files were infected (3 days prior when I ran Norton’s there were no problems). I hit repair & had problems from then on.

I tried going into my registry but it wouldn’t let me run regedit. My device manager was empty. My IE was slow & erratic. My Google toolbar was missing, etc. Norton’s started giving me error messages. My computer wouldn’t restore to earlier date.

I found an alternative way to get in the registry & backed it up and then restored a previously backed up registry. Then I couldn’t get into several programs – or get on the internet – everything was worse so I went back to the registry I had just backed up & restored it.

Then I went to your web page and followed all the instructions, except running the online scans (because I couldn’t get on the Internet). All the malware seems to be gone. But now there seems to be something wrong with my Nortons. And, most importantly I cannot connect to the internet. I am networked to my son’s computer with a 2wire wireless adaptor. His connection is fine.

I went to network adaptors and to my 1394 Connection under support and it shows no IP address, subnet mask or default gateway. When I hit “repair” I get the message tcp/ip is not enabled for this connection. I called my provider but they said my tcp/ip file must have been corrupted & they could not help. They thought something in the registry was wrong. Can someone please give me an idea of what to do from here?

I am attaching my HJ file.

    Welcome to Major Geeks.

Your version of Java is out of date and should be updated. http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Do you really want Google Desktop on your system? Here is something gor you to consider http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/10/google_desktop_privacy_kerfuffle/

Update your Windows Defender definitions to teh latest defs if you have not already done so. There recently was an issue with Windows Defender identifying portions of Norton as malicious.

Scan with HijackThis and fix the following:
You really shouldn't have anythig in the IE Trusted Zone.

    To remove these items:
Download DelDomains and unzip it to your desktop.

Find the files from deldomains.zip on your Desktop and RightClick on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

Afterwards run Spybot and make sure you re-Immunize immediately. Then run a full system scan. If you get any reported problems, attach the log from Spybot.

You may have to uninstall and the install your Norton products to rectify the problem with Norton.

If you can not run the on-line scans in Safe Mode then run them from Normal Mode.

Post a fresh HijackThis log, and the BitDefender and Panda ActiveScan logs when you have them.

Thanks for the info - and I don't think I will use Google tool bar again...But maybe my message wasn't clear - I can't run scans because I can't get online in any mode!

My 1394 Connection shows no IP address, subnet mask or default gateway. When I hit “repair” I get the message tcp/ip is not enabled for this connection. I think possibly the tcp/ip file must have been corrupted or something - or something is wrong in the registry.

I don't know what to do and I really, really need help as I work at home and have to download files.

OK, sounds like your WinSock may be broke.

Download and run WinSock Fix XP

I tried it but it didn't change anything. I believe my computer is "clean" now but my registry is totally messed up! I've tried everything. Besides not being able to connect to the Internet I am also having weird problems with other programs like certain windows in my TurboTax program now longer work, etc. I'm thinking of just backing up my data and starting over with a new install of Windows.
    Thanks for your help!
