Problem with a Gateway MX6955 Laptop.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometime the other night my Gateway MX6955 laptop froze up. When I tried to restart it the power light would come on and stay on and the hard drive light would come on for about 3 seconds and that is about it. Nothing comes up on the screen. Any help would be great help.

The motherboard could have died at that point. If it is still under warranty contact Gateway for warranty service.

Thanks for the tip. It is not under warranty any more. I can send it back to Gateway and pay $200 for them to fix what ever is wrong. I was just trying to see if it might be something simple before I do that. A few people that I talked to said the hard drive might be bad.

A bad hard drive wouldn't cause the screen to be blank. It would say something like Disk read error, Error loading operating system, or Operating system not found.

Are you sure when you turn on your computer the screen is completely blank?

The price to repair is up to you. How old is the laptop?

About 2 1/2 years old and I know in laptop years that is old. As far as the screen I do not see anything at all on it. I have had some trouble in the past with viruses and have had to start from scratch twice. I just ordered a new hard drive this morning to try that, but if it is the motherboard and I fix it the new hard drive would be an upgrade from the old. Any suggestions on how I could find out if it is the motherboard. It is just funny the laptop has been working fine for the last month and now all of a sudden this happens.

If you don't see anything on the screen I doubt a hard drive is going to fix it.

As it looks like it's not Posting

Does it make any beeps? It could also be bad ram preventing it from posting.

It might be posting, just not showing anything on the monitor. Do you have an external monitor you can hook it up to?

There are no beeps there never was with this Laptop. Also I do have an extra monitor but I need to be able to get to windows to tell it to output to that monitor. Unless there is another way to do that.

Laptops usually have key combos to set display to internal, external or both. Check your manual. If you don't have one, go online and Gateway should have a link to download your manual or view the pdf online.

That may do well as a workaround, but it's not an ideal solution. Maybe you should try reseating the battery, as well as checked for any looseness around the power port. Do you notice, even for a fraction of a second, the plug icon disappearing at any point?

I'm sorry; please ignore my last post, it was meant for a different thread.
