I need help quickly with windows xpee pee

So i guess that sfc /scanow is another command that can be run from the recovery console to repair the actual files? So i guess you selected the format that windows was on and when it saw the previous installation it asked if you wanted to reformat the entire drive and you told it to reformat. Well anyway scince shadow didnt tell you how to update the dell drivers i will tell you how. But you will need to get the internet software set up again on your computer. Then go to the device manager and find all the dell drivers for your devices. Then side click it and you should have an option that says update driver.... click that. Then you get something on if you want to specify where the software drivers are or have the computer look automatically. Do automatic cause it will check all your dirives then go to the internet and look. If it finds something it should install automatically. Oh yeah one more thing. Bomba make sure binky makes you install an NTFS file system. (NTFS is alot more stable than FAT32)

Shadow how do I find the device manager? And I don't understand hardly anything that the new tech guy is talking about. It says that I have NTFS files already. I knew that I should have called the maintance guy to come haul this out to the dumpster!

Do I really need both spybot and spyware blaster? When I have too many of the same kinds of programs all running on my pc I seem to get into a lot of trouble. I do weekly scans at housecalls and panda and at least once a month at pcpitstop.

 

SFC /SCANNOW is the Windows File check utility and it will overwrite any hotfixes you have installed, so you will have to run Windows Update after running SFC /SCANNOW.

chkdsk /f will check and repair errors with the file system on the disk.
chkdsk /r implies /f and will check and repair errors with the file system and the drive.

I did tell him to update the Dell driver's.

NTFS is more secure than FAT32.

 

Yeah umm shadow knows more than i and has some good software listed there. I have mcafee on this pc and even though its a little big on my system it prtects it well. The antivirus the choice is up to you. They all work well. Keep us posted on what happens.

 

Oh dont freak out that is very easy to get to. All you do is side click my computer and select manage. Then go to device manager. And thats good that you already have an ntfs file system there. Thanks for clearing up my confusions shadow. Lemme know if this helps ya

 

Spybot catches things Ad-Aware SE doesn't. Spyware Blaster provides better system immunization then Spybot. They won't interfer with each other. Spyware Guard and MS AntiSpyware are the only two that will run realtime and they won't interfer with each other.

Question, what Model and Model Number is your Dell? I'll find the drivers for it an link you to the webpage for them. I'm familiar with the Dell web site and can find things faster.

 

Wont the auto updater do that though? I thought that went out and found the files on the website automatically.

To get to the Device Manager:

Right-Click on My Computer

Select Properties from the Menu

Click-on the Hardware tab

Click-on the Device Manager button

That will open the Device Manager

Shadow I dont know what to do once I found the devise manger. And there seems to be something wrong with ie because I can't get to the smilie menu or play the games at www.toadgames.com I installed shockwave ok but nothing comes up when I click on a game to play.

I just dont understand what you are talking about. Shadow has been very helpful and I am sure that he is someone that I can trust to guide me properly. I do appreciate that you are willing to help but if you read the whole thread you will understand that Binky doesn't know that much either. So we relied on Shadow last night for help and I am comfortable with him.

I know that binky doesnt know much just what i am try to say is that whenever i say something you dont get it. When shadow tells you the same thing i said you understand perfectly. He just puts it a little neater than i do. Oh well. I guess i will just sit and watch then

Install and run this program:

EVEREST Home Edition

When you run the program do the following:

Click-on Report in the File Menu

Select Report Wizard

Click-on Next

Click-on System Summary Only

Click-on Next

Click-on Plain Text

Click-on Finish

Click-on Save To File

Browse to My Documents

Accept the default file name, close the report wizard and everest.

Open the Report.txt and edit out any personal information that may by in the file, computer name and such, save the file and post it as an attachment in your reply. It will help me to figure out which drivers you need for you computer.

Let's get your system up2date and running correctly first, then we will handle other issues afterwards.

 

After we get the right, drivers installed for your Dell. You can install SP2, then install all High Priority updates from Windows Update, after all the High Priority updates are installed and your computer reboots, run Windows Update and select Custom not Express. After it is done scanning the computer click on Software, Optional. You can install any updates that you may need based on your computer and software configuration. Don't download any updates from Hardware, Optional; they will most likely be the wrong drivers for your computer and crash it.

If your cd rom can only recognize the windows CD, and you have tried to reinstall windows that way, did you reformat the drive before reinstalling?
there should be an option to do a new install, that's the one you want, it will wipe everything on the drive and THEN reinstall windows.
you are still going to need device drivers for your video card, and things like that because the ones that windows uses aren't always the best choice.

 

Your Dell drivers are up2date. So, go ahead an install SP2.

As to the smilies issue, you probably need to install Java VM from Sun Microsystems. We will worry about that after Windows is up2date.

 

She has already done a 'Clean Install', if she is using the disks that came with her system then the drivers installed during installation. I have this thread under control, anymore than one person working with Bomba, gets confusing for her. Your desire to help is appreciated, if there is anything I can't handle I will ask for help.

We will deal with the Java issue later, right now it is more important to get your system up2date, and with all the security apps installed and working before, you start surfing and playing games, the system could get infected.

 

Ok Shadow I really tried to find out about my monitor. I clicked on properties and it just said standard. Then I turned off the whole thing and tried to look on the back of the moniter itself but I am simply not strong enough to be able to swivel it enough to actually see anything. Do you want to do that remote assistance thing? I would trust you and really I doubt that you could do anything to make it worse than it is now.


Do I dump window washer and pcbugdoctor? I just thought that I ought to ask before I reinstall them. (I don't know how to use window washer anyway but I do like bugdoctor because the bug is so cool.)

Windows Washer is a decent program, but if you don't know how to use it then don't install it. I'm not familiar with PC Bug Doctor, but with the list of programs I gave you earlier, your system will be sufficiently protected. There is one other program you should install that is CCleaner a.k.a Crap Cleaner.

I don't think the remote assistnace route is necessary, besides this way you will get more out of what I am having you do.

Worry about the monitor later, if you have the documentation for your system still, there should be a book for your monitor and it will have the model number.

 

It was a 'Command Terminal' box. That is normal for some drivers to use the Command Terminal when installing.

 

Some of the papers that came with this pc got lost during all the times it sat in the shop waiting for Dell to do something about it. Crap Cleaner was one of the first things that I installed alond with cw shredder and stop sign. I downloaded a-squared but haven't installed it yet. I like that one too because the free license doesn't expire until after the end of time. I am still working on downloading some of the things that you suggested. I am kinda slow you know.

Run EVEREST again expand Display in the left column and click-on Monitor, look in the right column for Monitor Name and Model tell me the values are in those fields.

Shadow that spyguard program says the definitions are from August 2003. How can that be a good program?

Open SpyWareGuard and run LiveUpdate the definitions should be 1/22/04, those are the latest and still are good; SpywareGuard uses advanced Heuristics scanning methods.

 

I did do that Shadow and was suprised when the date was not changed after doing it twice. I guess that I will do it again after a-squared gets done.

I did have to reboot and the date did change when I looked again. a2 doesn't like EVEREST but I told it to shut up and let it run anyway.

 

That driver is installed from the Intel Chipset Software. False positives are a problem sometimes. You just have to notifiy a2 of the false positive and they can correct it with the next definitions update.

 

How do you know the difference between a false postive and a real problem? If you hadn't told me to install EVEREST I would have promptly deleted it and started running scans like a woman posessed.
