Shadow I am going to reformat again. I can't do anything because I have no ram. I don't understand what happened here. I was used to having at least 100 after using the FreeRam program but now I am operating at 23 most of the time which is not enough to let me install, let alone use my programs. Maybe I screwed up because of all the people talking on this thread. So I am going to start over again but it will be tomorrow morning probably. And yes I did all the spyware and trojan scans but there is nothing showing up in any of the scans. My only recourse I think is to throw away the computer or reformat again. Since everything is already laid out so nicely for me here I can just follow the instructions that you have already given.

Your your RAM shouldn't be getting that low. How much memory did you system come with? If you feel you need to start over than go ahead.

256MB RAM Since I posted a few minutes ago I went back to some of the online scanners for trojans and stuff and I am still getting no reports of anything lurking on my pc. I have unistalled everything that you had suggested that I didnt have previously and still no ram. I dont understand this at all.

256MB isn't alot, you should really have 512MB or better, your system board can take up to 1-Gig.

Do you have a lot of apps running in your system tray?

No and I used task manager to try to see what was running and shut down everything that looked unneccesary. I even uninstalled my psc. I don't have money to buy more RAMN. I know that you will say that it is cheap but nothing is cheap when you live on Social Security Disability. I am not making excuses here but rather trying to explain. I had plenty of ram to function well before I installed cable. I think comcast has made me come completely undone.

I don't understand what comcast is installing on your computer. There should be no need for 'special' software to be installed to use your cable connection. The cable is cannected to the cable modem, which in turn is connected to the ethernet card on the computer. Then using the 'New Connection Wizard' you would configure your connection.

OK Shadow I am back and all I have done is reformat AGAIN and I have updated all my drivers. I did not put in the comcast cds. I have done the windows update except for Service Pack 2. At this moment all I have installed is ccleaner and FreeRam. I need to install my antivirus software but do I install sp2 first or the antivirus stuff? Oh and my RAM says I have 156 or 61%available as I am typing this. So I am ok at this point. I know that you said that you dont like this kind of program but for me it is a good diagnostic tool.

Put SP2 on the system then load the Anti-virus software. If you want to use FreeRam then go ahead. Just monitor your RAM levels as you install software. Eventually you'll find the one that is 'hogging' your system resources.

ok thanks I think that I will download SP2 straight from windows rather than using my cd. And how do I turn off this very annoying Windows Messenger? I can exit it just fine but I can't remember how to disable it completely.

In Windows Messegner, click-on Tools in the file menu, select Options, click-on Preferences tab, uncheck Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts, uncheck Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background, click-on OK, and exit Windows Messenger.

[EDIT] It would probably be better if you load SP2 from the CD, many people seem to have problems installing SP2 from Windows Update. [/EDIT]

Yikes I just barely got a chance to stop the update from the website. I will use the cd but you know that I will still be getting more updates for sp2 from the site too. I just thought that it might be a bit easier to get it all at the same time. Why does all this stuff have to be so complicated? (I am not really expecting an answer but I felt like whining a bit LOL)

Turned off the messenger too thanks!

Yikes I am finally back I think. I formated something like 8 times but I still am getting conflicts and ccleaner says that I have active x issues. Linda (my Aussie friend) was trying to do a remote assistance thing and messed up my pc even worse than it was before. She said that it was due in part to the distance. Apparently the farther remote one is, the harder it is to do the remote assistance. She said that she felt like she was trying to swim in a mud puddle.

I had to go into the hospital twice since I last posted on this thread and I still need help if you will still help me Shadow. I have followed all the steps faithfully and I am getting rather good at this but I still have some of the same issues. How do I figure out this active x stuff?
