I recently set up a PC for my Daughter in the UK. We are in touch via email and MSN(her phone isn't in yet). When I set her up I tried to download and install Quicktime, and I couldn't connect to Apple to finish off the install. A message came up that there was a problem and did I want to debug it? I said no, and the message went away. I'm home now, and my Daughter tells me that the message is back ,and it's affecting a lot of the stuff she does. (an example, it won't let her empty her hotmail email folder. when she tries the message pops up)

I'm going to get her to send me an exact description af the message, or even a jpg, and when she does I will post it, but I thought I'd ask this now in case it rings a bell with anyone.

She has an Intel Celeron 1.2G with 256RAM, and XP home

    Thanks All

Many free downloads such as QuickTime, Kazaa, WinAmp, etc also download spyware on
to your PC which can cause pop-ups on sites that don't normally have pop-ups
Would suggest that she does a virus scan.
    Would recommend Spybot and adware.

Yes Mr P it would help better with the full error message as their are a few things that could cause that, one being a faulty install of a program or possibly a missing MS update patch, I kinda remember one helping with a similar error/popup at startup of XP.

I would if you didnt already download and install the Standalone version of quicktime http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/ rathe than the online install one, as the standalone doesnt need an internet connection to install. SO uninstall QT and re-install the one from link above.

As for Hotmail is she trying to delete the messages online or via OE? as if its OE then hotmail doent delete then straight away sometimes they take days to go BUT they do in end.

But please post any error messages when you get them.

Here is what the erroe message says:

"A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: 2 Error: Access is denied"

    Any ideas anyone?

it is possible that either the VB runtime or java files are corrupt........

It will do no harm in installing latest versions or VB Runtime and Java... you can either get java from Sun Micro or its still lurking in MS's Cab pool

    VB Runtime

    MS java

    Sun java

the downside is this maybe a software problem that may need whichever program she is runing to be un-installed and re-installed, may take a bit to track the offending program down.

    Thanks Halo and jujet84.

I tried to install from the two .exe files I downloaded(to my own pc, not my Daughters), and XP wouldn't get past the logo when I restarted. I had to do a system restore. Could you tell me in a little more detail what those three links are. My Daughter is less savvy than me, even, and I want to make it as easy as possible for her. I do appreciate the help.

Thanks Scouse, but I think she might be afraid to mess with the registry. If her PC goes down, so does the schoolwork. I told her to ask around in her classes for a geek who will work for a beer or two, and see what (s)he can do. That doesn't mean I am not open to suggestions here, and I welcome and appreciate all.

    Have her try this
Select “Tools/Internet Options/Advanced” from the Menu Bar at the top of the browser window.

    : : :

: : : 2) Under “Browsing”, CHECK the box that is captioned “Disable Script Debugging”

    : : :

: : : 3) Click on “Apply” at the lower right of the dialog window.

    : : :

: : : 4) Click “OK” to exit the window.

    1. Spyware isnt a virus, so a virus scanner would not be whats needed
    2. I don't know where you got the idea from, but this is from apple, a highly reputable company for making crapandtoss (Mac) computers, quicktime is a type of format for media, such as realmedia/Realoneplayer, its a special type of media that only one player can play, the only reason why people get it, is because its required to play the media. I highly doubt there is spyware in it.

 OK should have been more clear.Should have posted do a scan for spyware and a virus scan.
I stand corrected on quicktime :D
