I need help with an external hard drive

Hi, I just got a new external hard drive to replace the dead internal hdd
but I can't get it to work. It say that it might not be recognizing it. Can someone please help me? Its a My Book Elite from WD and it's 1tb.

Please tell the geeks:

What your operating system is?
Is this HARD DRIVE replacing your internal drive that had you operating system Windows? installed on it?
Is your bios configured enabled to allow usb devices to run.
Did the external drive come with any media for installation such as an "installation or drivers" CD

Yes its replacing an internal hard drive that died.
As far as I know it is configured to allow usb. At least it sad it was and no it didn't come with any software. The drivers and stuff your suppose to get them off of the internet.
The os is vista.

So if it was the internal hard drive, which is being replaced and potentially had your Windows Vista installed on it?

Then the Hard drive you are replacing it with, then the external usb hard drive, will need Windows installed on it.

Otherwise if you can still boot through to Windows Vista, hmmm... kinda sounds like you can? you will need to download and install the drivers, for the external usb hard drive from the makers website would be a good starting point make sure you get the right model, this should allow Windows Vista to recognise the external Hard drive, sounds like Vista just doesnt know what to make of the external drive untill it gets the information to allow it to know what it actually is otherwise it just detects a usb device..

Those are your options as far as I can tell...
