Hi folks...i found this site after searching and searching for online help for malware found on my neighbor's computer. Basically I have removed the majority of the STD's (hehe) found on that thing and am still left with the 3 desktop icons of Error cleaner, privacy protector and something else that I can't remember at the moment. I am at work and hoping to get some tips on what to try once I get home. I am unable to get to the internet unless I am in safe mode
and ie has set safenaweb as the homepage, not sure if the same malware is causing this. Can someone please tell me what programs to download in order to submit my logs. Thanks in advance!!!

Hello, I actually got to step 2 of the Windows XP cleaning procedures. I succesfully installed the four programs. I ran combofix.exe and have attached the log. However after going through all of the installation for Spybot, the computer is actually turning off right about when it gets to 17k of the 106k files. Not sure if there is another program that I can use. Or if this is a critical step. Please advise and thank you so much.

No..it's not critical ...download the MGTools zip and run it ...it will produce a log in a zip format to attach on your next reply.

ok so after unsuccessfully getting spybot to finish i went ahead and tried to do step3 and running avg. that also would not finish the scan without the computer
shutting down. there were two tracking cookies detected and I ended up deleting them because avg would not generate a report until the entire scan completed.after about 5 times of the machine rebooting, i deleted the cookies and moved on to step 4. mgtools ran without incident and i am attaching the zip file.Thank you for the help in advance.

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Now do a search for: SpySpotter System Defender ---> delete anything that is found.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Hi Tim,
I have a quick question. I noticed that the preferred AV software is AVG. However, one of the steps is to remove all av software. Currently, I have AVG,zonealarm(do you consider this av software or just a firewall) and Norton on the box. I have run into problems trying to uninstall Norton and get an error about windows installer. Am I going to be ok with removing zonealarm and avg and leaving Norton for scanning purposes?Thank you...I am just really trying to follow the steps:)

No...keep what you have ...avg is anti-spyware not anti-virus ...you need the firewall and the Norton ( or some other anti-virus software).
Just disable them while you do the fixes ...not uninstall them! :)
