I have a SB Live 5.1 sound card, and want to use it for 4.1 or 4.0 (if it exists).
I went to the retail stores for some answers, but they just tried to sell me a new AUS $500 system. Now, I currently have 2 amps and 4 speakers, and are using the 4 speakers from one amp. I want to use the four speakers for front and back, so something like quadropohnic.
I did a diagram of what I am tring to achieve.

What I think I need is a 5.1/4.1 mini-jack that splits the output to:

    FL, FR
    BL, BR

Does such a thing exist? Or am I completely off my nut.

    Thanks.

5.1 is FL, FR, BL, BR, and Center, plus Subwoofer.
4.1 is the same as 5.1 minus Center.
4.0 would be only FL, FR, BL, BR.
What you need are two stereo-mini-phono-male to RCA-male-Left-and-Right cables. Plug one of each into your 5.1's Front Out and Rear Out jacks and feed to each of your two amps. Front will be Left and Right Stereo; Rear will be Surround, which will be the same signal to both speakers-- it is not discrete left and right.

Surround is actually a "difference" signal derived from feeding the positive wires of the Left and Right channels to the two terminals of a single speaker driver (known as the Hafler circuit)-- what results if the diffference between Left and Right, i.e. only the sounds that appear in the Left or Right channels, but not both. It is this sound information that gives the effect of ambience or immersion.

Center channel is derived from information that is common to both stereo channels, and anchors the dialog scenes to the viewing screen.

I had a 1969 Volkswagen with surround sound 8-track-- I kid you not...

    A new issue...

    Now, 1 more problem.

At the moment, I have it set up as follows:

Now, it works but I have to ajust the front and rear volume seperately and that, as you can imagine is a real pain.

So, as my larger amp has tow speaker outlets and many inputs, I was wondering if i could configure it to put say input 1 through speaker A, and input 2 through speaker B. Like this:

I would like to do it without any electrical tinkering if possible.

    Thanks

Sorry, I cant seem to find the edit button.

Here are the names of the systems:

    Pioneer GR-X530 Stereo Graphic Equalizer

    connected to a

    Pioneer A-X530 Stereo Equalizer

    Using a

    Pioneer S-V707X Speaker System

    With

    Pioneer PL-X340 Stereo Turntable
    Pioneer F-X430 FM/AM Digital Synthesizer (Tuner/Radio)
Pioneer PD-X99M 6-Stack Magazine CD Player

Another reason that I want to have both front and rear channels connected to the amp, is the sound quality beats the pants off the shitty little computer one I have for the front.

    Thanks

(if this post is above my old one, please read that aswell)

Although your second diagram doesn't seem to make any sense to me, it is for certain that your amplifier cannot feed different input signals to the A and B speaker outputs at the same time, even if their volumes are able to be independently adjusted (which I also doubt is possible).

What I was getting at, was feeding two seperate inputs, one to A channel, one to B channel, and having their volume ajusted simultaneously with the one control as it currently does.
