oo... dam lol, ya i guess... oo and what is a ethernet card? iv always wondered what that was the computer guy who made my desktop put in, hes like your internet might go a lil faster... i was like ya i kno... like i knew what he was talkin about lol, and another question is can i use any card for any router? like can i use a d-link router and a linksys card? or would that not work?

  3. eric06

    eric06 Sergeant Major

yeah that should work as long as they are both the same type (ex: 802.11b or 802.11g, they both must be same.)

i'm trying to keep it simple for him but yes you can interchange them but it will all run at b speed which is much much slower than g.

there are WAN and LAN wireless networks. The LAN is more closely related to having your local house-hold on a limited range wifi.
Now what you want is the WAN version of it. Hotspots that may be available at specific locations that cover large areas. WiFi is not all ecompassing geographically.

you can purchase keys for wifi networks from places such as
    http://wifiminutes.com/

or you can search for free spots

what can I help you explain..

I had a hell of a time explaining to my wife and I told her it was like this..

LAN wireless is like your cordless phone.. only works in and around your house.
WAN wireless is like your cell phone..

that's an extreme basic comparitive explanation.. but she got the point .

don't get Linksys. Get Netgear. I have the exact same setup you are trying to achieve. I have the Netgear MR814v2 802.11b wireless Cable/DSL router and a Netgear MA521 802.11b wireless pc card. the router comes with instructions on how to setup your router with your cable/dsl (whichever you have). You don't need 802.11g (imo) unless you plan on transfering huge files between your laptop and desktop. 802.11b is just fine for doc's and pics.

installed a netgear 2 weeks ago for a friend.. Now that MS is out of the wifi hardware business, that is my next recommended brand.

You can't connect directly to another computer with a wireless card, nor can anyone access your laptop directly through their card. You will need to connect through some network router, like the one you plan to buy or the one at your hotel, if they offer wireless internet. Tapping into a network without permission isn't legal, though.

oo i think i kno what you mean now, so if i get a wireless router and card ill be usen LAN? and if i try to get WAN i have to pay for it?

  28. acejones

    acejones A Different Title

WAN is wide area network. LAN is local area network.

you are comparing apples with oranges. if you get a wireless router and pc card, then you will have a LAN with your laptop and desktop. the WAN is you connecting to the internet.

  29. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

WAN's don't necessarily mean "internet".. the internet is a WAN, yes.. but it is not synonymous. In addition, you don't necessarily have to pay for wirless access. I posted a link to a site that lists free hotspots. A hot spot is just an area where Wireless is available.

there's alot to all this stuff, 40's .. I would recommend sticking around ..reading.. and posting questions when you don't understand something.

We can't help you if you don't tell us what's confusing.. tell what you understand and what you don't.

ok well LAN is the connection im getin rite? just the plain wireless router and card rite? and i have no clue what WAN is, people are sayin its free and all this stuff i dunno, and you guys say to get netgear router and card? not linksys?

This isn't helping one bit. 106 posts, six pages, and I don't think X_40's_X is any closer to having his laptop and desktop share his internet connection than when he made his original post. NO offense to him, but it's clear he has a minimal understanding of what he wants to accomplish and how to go about it, and going off on tangents is only making the matter more confusing to him, and isn't serving anyone's interests.

yeah i kno, am i suppose to kno this ad hoc network and wireless crossover stuff?? or am i just fine

  40. TheDoug

    TheDoug MajorGeek

Forget ad hoc and crossover for now. I think you have to first decide whether you need or want the faster 802.11g stuff, or will 802.11b serve your needs. Then pick a brand and go out and buy it-- you can't start sharing your internet connection until you do. The hands-on experience will be far more enlightening than having to keep asking questions about something you are totally unfamiliar with.

yeah doug is right. go out and buy it then you will get to work with it and then you can start asking deeper questions when you understand the basics.

yeah i guess in 6 pages of crap, i missed it.

go netgear. if you want your laptop of have a wireless connection, get a wireless cable/dsl router, and a wireless pc card. the router will have instructions on how to set everything up. very simple. should be up in 10 minutes or less.
