    I am trying to clean my wife's computer. It is window's vista 64 bit operating system. The virus malware keeps popping up webpages like www.porno.com and www.adult.com. It also keeps telling me that files are infected and asks me to activate my antivirus program and I have avg on the computer. The avg tells me that a threat was detected, trojan horse psw.ldpinch.adzc. when i choose to heal it it then starts saying it is not responding. I attempted to follow the cleaning procedure in the read me first section and it would not let me run ccleaner, superantispyware(regular or portable versions), malwarebytes, or mgtools. I don't know what to do, please help

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

    Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

    You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
    Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

    Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

    It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
    Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

    Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools (Run MGTools.exe in safe mode if normal mode is problematic)

    Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • a log from online SAS scan if you could make one
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
    The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    Ok, here is what happened, doing the rkill is the first thing that has allowed me to run any other programs, i completed that, then I ran avpfind and I have attached that log. Next I ran exehelper and attached that log. I tried to run the superantispyware online version and for some reason internet did not seem to work anymore on the infected computer, so I ran the version portable version i downloaded from the read and run me first part of the forum under the vista cleaning procedures. I was unable to update because of the internet issue, but it ran and said I had 186 adware tracking cookies and 1 malware.trace. I chose to heal and remove, or whatever similar option that superantispyware has, then it said to do a restart which i did, after the restart I had my original problem I did with the computer and it never indicated the items were removed. I could not start superantispyware to see if a log was created and I could not run mgtools. should I run rkill again and then run mgtools? Just let me know what to do next. Thanks for what we have done so far

    Try MGTools in safe mode? Try renaming MGTools.exe to magpie.com.

    While you are waiting for Kes to get back to you, let's do the following:

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now see if you can boot into normal mode and do the following;

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell Kestrel how things are working now!

    Ok, here is what happened,

    During Hijack this I could not find
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:60909

    I found one very similar except for the 60909 part at the very end, it just had a different set of numbers so i clicked on that one in it's place, sorry if that was a mistake.

    when i did the fixme.reg i got a success message

    I ran avenger and did the reboot but there was no avenger.txt file open after the reboot, nor was their a file named the same on the C drive so I was unable to attach any such file.

    I did have a message come up from windows defender which i thought i disabled but for some reason I could not find a way to keep it from turning back on after a restart. The message says Windows defender detected programs that might compromise your privacy or damage your computer and the name of the file is Backdoor:Win32/Cycbot.B and it is listed as a Sever alert level. I don't know if that has anything to do with Avenger trying to work at startup and my inability to turn off windows defender screwing that up or if it is a real threat to my computer so I did not choose to remove or ignore it yet.

    The computer seems to be working now though, other than the most recent comment about windows defender meaning that I am not getting a bunch of popups directing to porn sites or fake messages about a security threat.

    I have not tried to use the full capability of the computer or the internet yet because of the windows defender warning and if you could tell me if i should remove it or ignore it I would appreciate it.

    Thanks for the help so far

    Hello there. There is still work to do:

    AVG Free 8.5 <--- This is outdated, plus it is no longer an antivirus on our list of recommended. You would be better off uninstalling it once we are finished here and installing something else.

    McAfee Security Scan <-- Uninstall this too before installing new antivirus.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

    Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{B226DAE9-F4F6-41AA-9CD0-4000E7E09068}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{B226DAE9-F4F6-41AA-9CD0-4000E7E09068}]
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "svchost"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\RunOnce]
    "svchost"=-
    :files
    C:\Users\patti\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\conhost.exe
    C:\Users\patti\AppData\Roaming\9C69.335
    C:\Windows\system32\bxqg.txt
    C:\Windows\nbgukjh.txt
    C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\khdaa.sys
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\sbkria.sys
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\bxqg.txt
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\khdaa.sys
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\sbkria.sys
    C:\Users\patti\AppData\Local\Temp\csrss.exe
    C:\Users\patti\AppData\Roaming\dwm.exe

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

    NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Now I want you to try and run this:

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Then this:

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

    Now an online scan:

    Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Attach this key: Open up the Registry Editor and navigate to the key, once you have clicked on the final windows folder at the end of the path, go to File > Export > and save it somewhere handy like your desktop. Zip up the key and attach it for me.

    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\[B]windows[/B]
    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    here are the rest.
    I got rid of avg and the mcafee scan and disabled windows defender as requested.

    I attached both logs for the mglogs with the first one saved as it is normally named and I changed the name for the second one you requested so you could tell them apart

    OK, the reg. key is for you printer. But we still have one item that doesn't want to go away.

    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Users\patti\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\conhost.exe

    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "svchost"=-

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [ResetHosts]
    [createrestorepoint]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]

    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

    Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach this log file to your next message.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\_OTM\MovedFiles
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Good to know!!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
