I have a Toshiba Tecra A2 these are its specifications:

    Technology type : Intel® Celeron® M processor 340
    clock speed : 1.50 GHz
front side bus : 400 MHz
    2nd level cache : 512 KB

    Operating system Windows® XP Professional

System memory standard : 256 MB
    technology : DDR RAM

Hard disk capacity : 40 GB

I run AOL on the laptop. Lately, when I try to open the AOL application, a message appears saying that AOL needs to close to install the files needed to connect, when I click ok the application closes and nothing happens. Whenever I try to open the application the same thing happens. Then I tried to go and rebuild AOL internet Adapter but a message appears saying that the internet adapter has already been unistalled. I have tried to reinstall AOL but whenever I do so exactly the same happens.

Recently my taskbar appearance has changed to Windows Classic Style automatically. Whenever I try to change it back to Windows XP style, by right clicking on my desktop the clicking on properties and then going under the appearance tab, there is no option to change back to Windows XP style.

Also when I go to device manager, there is nothing there at all, not even any words.

Whenever I try to install Norton Antivirus, it does the pre-install scan but after that, when tries to install Norton Antivirus, a message appears saying that Norton Antivirus was unable to install and it gives me the option to retry. When I press retry the message appears again.

I have been able to install Ad-Aware SE from a CD. When Ad-Aware scanned my laptop, no critical adware was found but this could be due to the fact that I was not able to update the virus definition due to no access to the intenet.

I have read the forum on http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
However some of the programs that I installed could not scan because they needed updates via the internet. Also I could not do any of the internet scans as the tutorial says to do.

    I AM NOW STUCK

    Please HELP!
(I have very important work to do on the laptop)

    Thanks in Advance

While I'm not sure that these problems are all malware related, let's check.

First, right clicking the Desktop is not where you choose the how you want your TaskBar and StartMenu to appear. You should be right clicking the Start button and selecting Properties. Then click the Start Menu tab and then select Start Menu (Classic Start Menu is probably selected right now). But maybe you really did mean how the windows and buttons are presented (I'm not sure).

Please follow the steps below (if you do not already have this on the PC, you will have to use a CD, a flash drive or a floppy...etc):

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I have got a HJT log, but there is absoloutely no way to transfer the HJT log from my laptop to my pc and I only have internet access on my pc

When I try to burn it on to CD-RW it says that I have not inserted a writable CD, I have tried this with two brand new CD-RW's and the same thing happened.

When I try to transfer it onto a memory stick, the laptop does not recognise it nor does it install, where as before within a few seconds of plugging the memory stick in to the laptop, a small message would appear telling me that it has found my memory stick, and that the memory stick is ready to use. When I go to my computer there is no sign of an extra drive which should be the memory stick, where as before there was.

When I try to print it the same thing happens where by it does'nt find or recognise my printer and it won't let me install it.

I need help within two hours and right now it is 20:30 GMT TIME

    THIS IS VERY URGENT !!!

I'm not sure what to tell you. It is rather difficult to help you without any information about what is running on your PC. I would suggest you try booting in safe mode to see if you can do any of the following:
    - connect to the internet (try shutting down all unnecessary applications when in safe mode) if you can connect, upload your HJT log.

    - try writing to the CD in safe mode if possible.
    - try writing to you memory stick in safe mode
    - do you have a floppy drive that can be written to

The alternative may be to find some application where you can tie the serial ports of your two PC's together to transfer files. Other than that, you would have to re-type what you are seeing in you HJT log.

This still sounds like a deeper problem than malware, but anything is possible.

I think that I will have to write out the whole HJT log as i didn't have any luck in safe mode.

I've been noticing something every time i turn off my laptop. There is always a box where it is ending something called "SAMPLE" and then it asks me to click end now. This has only been happenening recently. So I searched through my C drive and I found some folders which were a lighter yellow colour than normal and their names were written in a grey colour. I opened these folders and inside the files' names were writting in blue.

I went to Search in Windows from the start menu and I searched all files and folders for "SAMPLE". I found a pair of folders both called sample music, and they both contained tha same files, but one folder had blue writing and this was the same with sample music. So I deleted the folder with blue coloured writing.

Then I searched on google for "virus called sample". There were many links, some from Symantec. From what I have read it seems, that if have this virus, then it is doing a lot of damage.

On the symantec links it tells you how to remove it, however I am not sure if I should do so.

    PLEASE HELP

You probably mean a message like "End Program Sample". I know I have seen this before but believe it is a driver related problem. I do not think it was anything to do with a virus. And as I implied in messages # 2 & #4, I think that is where most of your problems lie (that is, hardware related drivers and or software issues).

As I said before, it will be diffcult unless you can get me the HJT log (at a minimum at least type up the processes). But I will also give you a couple things below to try:

    1) Open a command prompt by clicking Start, Run and enter cmd and click OK. Then enter the below command and tell me what happens.

    sfc /scannow

This will scan your PC for missing/corrupted system files and attempt to replace them. You may need your Windows XP CD and this will be a problem if you cannot use your CD drive.

    2) Use msconfig to limit all startup items:

    - run msconfig (click Start,Run and enter msconfig and click ok)
    - click the Selective Startup radio button
    - uncheck the top four items under this button.
    - Click Apply and OK

Now reboot. After reboot can you save your HJT log some how? You may need to enable some processes for your CD burner that we have disable with msconfig. But I will not be able to see them since you cannot post any logs from the PC.....so I cannot help you determine which ones.

If you do not have too much important info on this PC, you may be better off with a reinstall.

I think I have typed up all the running processes and it took me ages to do.

If it helps, there are some other problems. I can't backup my data, I can't run Help and Support. When I put my cursor over the battery to see how much power I have left, it comes up not in numbers but as some unknown random characters. There are probably some more but i can't remember them.

I gave you some other steps to try! I'm waiting for feedback on them.

There's nothing bad in the list the you gave me thus far. The rest of the HJT log is important. It shows a variety of important registy keys and values.
