alrite so yesterday I downloaded the ISO for Suse 9.1 Personal and today I put it on a cd using nero. I got all of that done and I get to the part in the installation where it scans for the hardware that i have. I get to the part where it scans for software and it says that there aren't any packages. Then I have to go in and look for a file called user.sef but i can find it in the hundreds of files and folders on the disk. I need help big time because this is the only thign bothering me. I know though that there are going to be packages on the cd rom. Its probably so simple but I can't figure it out so I came to you guys. any help or responds would be great... thanx.

hmm... alright i will. But whenever i got to the suse website it makes it seem very difficult. Can someone just post a link to download the regular ISO for x86 computers? I don't want to siff through entire FTP servers downloading all the files. That is why I thought that linuxiso.org was such as great site. I guess I will try again....

I heard it was a great Linux. LOL what is your opinion? What linux should I get, and I know I'm a beginner so I should be downloading Knoppix, but I want a real OS that I'll have partitioned. I've been hearing a lot about mandrake 10 lately so i guess that would be my second one to go with.

imo, mandrake is for the beginner. knoppix is if you don't want to mess with installing it. red hat is for the geeks that know linux.

Then what is Suse for? lol. like what is it good for?

Nevermind about before. it's a lot easier now to download suse from the website then it was about a month ago.

not sure what makes it different than the other distro's...check out their website. should tell ya. but mandrake is the only version i didn't have a problem booting with.

red hat froze with usb devices...knoppix froze looking for non-existant scsi devices. mandrake booted just fine. red hat was on this pc, knoppix on my inspiron 2500 laptop, and mandrake on a 400mhz celeron compaq.

Redhat is now called fedora. Red Hat isnt hard at all, easy installer and what not. Was actually my first distro. Slackware is all text based install, little bit more complicated.

All the Distro's are good. just about user friendliness and what not, they all have dofferent software and looks. I run SUSE and you can do anything with any linux distro that you can do with another. SuSE has a diffrent hardware detector than the rest called YaST, they each have their own. SuSE's is pretty good and so is mandrake. If you Dont like SUSE you can always go with another. then another till u find one that personnaly fits you. Check the companies websites to see what their goals are. Mandrake spawned off of Redhat 8 I think to make an easier and friendly Linux. Debian is supposed to be the best for servers cause of higher security. My website is on a debian server. just read up and decide what you want to try.

I'll agree with both of these.

But I disagree with this one. Geek distros seem to be Gentoo, Debian, and Slackware. Fedora is still suffering from Red Hat making their desktop version intended for Workstations instead of enthusiasts. It was very stripped down for quite some time, and it uses Gnome instead of KDE, which seems less popular.

Servers tend to be Red Hat because of the quality support.

One thing I want to make clear is its your choice for a desktop manager. Fedora may primarily show gnome but you can install KDE or whatever you want. SuSE only comes with KDE but I can install gnome and the GTK library is already on there. So if you see a distro you want to try dont say know because its not your favorite desktop manager.
