My sister is bought this (but she can return it, I think) but I know the specs are pretty low. Now, mind you this is for her young 10 yr old son, so it doesn't have to me top notching but good enough to do homework on. Another thing she asked about, is this upgradable? can we up the memory from 256 mb? or will it not be supported?

I turn to you my geeky friends, for your expert opinions. Thanks a bunch!!

The RAM on a little netbook like that will be soldered to the motherboard. You could upgrade it, but I recommend alot of practice with an iron before you even attempt it.

The best thing you could do is add flash memory to the expansion slot. I've only recently gotten into Android, and the forums related to it, but there are many programs out there that can modify the tablets/netbooks.

As far as programs to filter sites, searching the Android forums like Slatedroid could help. I don't think we have too many geeks who play with Android here yet...

I don't know if I will be as adventurous as to solder :-D He all he needs this lappy to do is to read articles on the web. That should be sufficient, no?

I'm not an Android expert either, (I think Adryn is, so he might chime in). Yeah it's a pretty low-end spec. machine, but god for the price, i.m.o. Upgradeable? - Not very, as far as I know. The anti-malware programs I dunno, to be honest - apart from the already stated looking at a few Android sites for such. Should be plenty of freebies around, anyway.
Yeah, should be fine for reading docs. and such like.

I suspect she's thinking more of keeping him from finding out what the internet is really for...

Net Nanny has an Android version. Though if he's computer savvy at all he'll probably be able to uninstall it with no problem.

    Hi Dya

My first question is what will it be used for as specs do not always outlay what you need a device for, some specs can be lower or higher, depends what you need device for, say internet browsing, most devices are ok, but for image editing (Photoshop etc) then more a 13 or 15 Intel is needed IMHO.

For homework is MS Office supported or installed?
Do you have online storage, Skydrive, iCloud etc

The site in question could use a copy editor who not Yoda is. ;)

Really want to give the kid a learning experience? Take windows off and plug in Linux and let him set that up. He'll either be ready for a moon shot, or have a new door stop in a couple of weeks. (I'm not kidding, I bricked a junker laptop while playing with Linux.)

She called me last night and told me she got it and behaved exactly like her Android phone, althought she couldn't find anywhere to upgrade the version no. All the button were the same, etc. She said he just needs it to read articles off the schools website and answer questions. I think this should be good enough, right?

When they released Windows XP at a TechNet conference, they were using a $6000 computer with the only available options as email and 2 or 3 intraweb sites.

If all the lil one needs is to read from school websites, this may fit. There is anti virus for Android available in the Play Market. Mom should monitor use to ensure nothing is being viewed that is harmful.

Yes if its just websites to read then that notebook is fine, personally I would be aiming for an Intel based notebook and one with Windows or Linux over Chrome but that's my preference.
