I'm applying for a couple tech related jobs that require a degree but will accept equivalent experience.

I don't have any degrees but I have years of experience, and I'm having a hard time explaining the type of experience I have. It's kind of all over the place. From software to hardware to security to troubleshooting, etc. I've always been the go-to person for all my family and friends for help and information about products.

I'm struggling how to put in everything making it sound professional but not to overbearing or wordy. Does this make any sense? help a poor, old girl out here. :-D

It's been a hundred years since I had to write a resume or apply for a job, but maybe this?

(X number) years experience troubleshooting and maintaining hardware, software, and security on personal computers, with an emphasis on (whatever you do most, all to the better if it's what they're looking for).

This is great! I have a tendency to make mine more wordy and I know most employers just want you to get to the point.

Adding to Sgt. Tibbs' advice, the first section of my resume is a heading of "Summary Of Qualifications." I use a list with bullet points, such as...

    • 10 years experience in trouleshooting and repairing desktop and notebook PCs.
    • Correcting operating system issues in Windows XP, Vista and 7.
    • Excellent customer service skills helping clients resolve problems by phone and remote support.
    • Five years experience training clients on MS-Office and Quickbooks.

The bullet point list allows a recruiter to quickly scan your skills and experience. If the job involves help desk support, the customer service and training points will likely be just as important to a potential employer as your hardware and software experience.

Good luck on your job search. Hope this helps. :)

I think they are both great ideas and can be used together in the same order as here.

Use Tibbs' example as a lead in. It should be general without much specifics.
Then use the bulleted list to flesh it out with detail.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    For technical positions.

Usually an Introduction paragraph, followed by why a you're interested paragraph, then the bullet points of what you've got to offer, With attached Photo-Copied proof; then Referees and photocopied References and contact details. and lastly, a thank you paragraph for their interest in you, etc.

I think there is a P.C. Resume program, (Winway), or something, with many different Templates to offer.

    Hopefully, this may help.

Cater your description to what the job description says. Also change your opening statement below your address to address the job so the scanner will allow your resume through. This site comes to mind. Trust it helps. http://www.keppiecareers.com/

A cool way that I used was that I was "crosstrained in DOS and WINDOWS". You may wish to use that word too.

You already have sound advice from the previous responses.

I would add only the following.

Don't use jargon or buzzwords, however trendy or clever you think they may be. Stick to plain English.

Everyone can use the former. Few can use the latter.
