Well, I haven't had the need for some time but I think now it's time to move into to digital video recording, with having kids and all. I need your input on digital recording devices (video) with the limitation of a 500.00 USD (give or take). This will be an x-mas present for the family.. perhaps an early one so I can get some video of my new son when he's born..

    Thanks Geeks!! :D

Yea I have been searching too and a little of what I have found is to avoid the DVD models. The best I have found is the Panasonic PV-GS500 a link to the prices and reviews http://www.bizrate.com/camcorders/p...mpareprices__keyword--panasonic+pv+gs500.html

But as you live in New York you can probable pick it up cheaper on Camera Blvd. Let me know what you find as I have it in mind for a birthday gift in the New Year:D

I think I'd like to avoid MiniDV. I want to stay away from tapes all around. I'd prefer hard drive or some type of Flash Memory media.

According to all the video experts the DVD format ones which only come in the Mini-Cam set-up are to be avoided, "Flash Memory' is fine for short clips and the Panasonic uses its "Flash" for stills, but for Video even the "Pro" cams are using Digital Tape like the Panasonic. the reason I am leaning toward the Panasonic is that it has most of the features of the "Pro" version, but has "Flash" stills at 4Mg pixels.

I initially felt exactly like you Kodo, about the DVD versions and still figure that once they get it sorted it will be a better format, but apparently right now that is not the case.

Anyway happy hunting, should let someone else voice there opinion.

I know nothing... but a recent review I read recommended the Sony DRDVD705E as the pick of the dvd/hard drive (Dvd res) but says watch out as high definition is about to break out.
The DRDVD705E lacks an external mic and remote and despite low size ccd picture quality was good. It was also the cheapest which is good for something that will be like my $400 cd burner in two years.
