If you are wanting to network with Dial-up, you would have to use a router that uses "On Demand" dial-up access for the computers to dial out for email. It really just takes a router and network cards for all the computers.

Now if it is high-speed, it is the same. http://www.ezlan.net has the info needed in one place.

As I described, networking is the same regardless if you want to share a connection with dial-up, Internet, or just between the computers. Using a router is easier, due to it does the DHCP translation easier, and you do not have to have a dedicated machine as the server to do the work of a Router, which can be cost constrictive for some.

If you want the simple route, set them up with ICS (Interne Connection Sharing), and put two NICS in two of the machines, but you will need to have them all on all the time.

Simple solution, Router, Switch, cables, and each machine has one NIC. You can get a package deal with Router and NICS and Cables for under $200.00 if you want cheap. If you want something that will work for a long time, spend the money.

It's possible that if you plug in the ethernet wire (and both pc's have a nic card), the Wizard will startup by clicking on the 'found new connection' icon, in the taskbar.

Check for nic [n/work] adapter - start/my computer - rt click properties/hardware/device manager/ '+' next to network adapter.

This tells you if you have nic.

If so, and you don't automatically get the wizard at re-boot after plugging in the hardwire, then start/control panel/network conn's/create a new conn (left column). Now follow prompts to 'set up a home or small office network'. You'll get a new wizard. Follow prompts to 'this pc connects to the internet through another pc' (FOR THE 'SATTELITE' PC), and 'this pc connects directly to the internet, and others connect to the internet through this pc (FOR THE 'PRIMARY' PC). Then assign names, etc., as prompted, to finish the wizard.

Finally, the folders from each PC, which contain files to be transferred, must be made available on the network (shared). Choose appropriate folders, rt click properties/sharing. Adjust settings accordingly.

You might get a prompt to make limited firewall adjustments. Be careful here. I have not made one necessary setting adjustment, which has limited, but not stopped the connection. I'm working on that one - see my thread
