I keep trying to install the f-secure internet security suite from my ISP and repeatedly it hangs up on the preparing to install box. It just won't finish. I have had Norton, f-secure trial, and AVG. I have uninstalled those through add/remove prog.s. I have telephoned my ISP for help on this and they keep telling me there are traces of something still on my PC that is not allowing the f-secure to install, but I am haveing a terrible time with this. Could someone please help me? Thank you very much. :)

It won't let me run it, says it's expired. It must have "remembered from the last time I had it.

Scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

    O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe (file missing)

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

Run full scans with Ad-Aware SE & Spybot S&D and have both programs fix what they find.
Note: Remember to get all updates before doing the scans.

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

After you complete the above, reboot and let me know if any problems remain.

Ok, I did the above and Ccleaner removed some cookies and ad-aware and spybot didn't find any threats. I ran the cleanmgr, rebooted and tried to install the security suite. Still no luck. It gets to the "preparing for install....please wait" box, and the green bar tab slowly goes up and then back down. slowly goes up, and back down. It repeats and repeats itself, so I have to cntrl/alt/delete and end task. Then it shows me the program is not responding, blah blah blah and here I am.

Let's dig a little deeper to make sure nothing is hiding...

    Download WinPFind

Extract it to the root folder of drive C ( C:\ ). This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

When it is done, it will show the results of the scan. Click on the Copy to Clipboard button and then paste the contents of the log in your clipboard. Then save it to a file using notepad and upload the text file here as an attachment.

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Please download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HOSTER to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster

    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.

    • Click the X to exit the program.
    Download Pocket KillBox

(Procede with this step even if they do not show in blue)
Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wbdbase.deu into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click NO.

    Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\etc\hosts.bak
into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click YES and allow your PC to reboot.

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually either way reboot into Safe Mode!
Once in Safe Mode, navigate to the following directory...

C:\WINDOWS\puYoZ ←–– Delete this whole folder if it exist!

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

After you complete the above, try the install once more and let me know how things are running.

ok, it's still not installing. But, the good news is the little bar with the green squares keeps going back down to 16 green squares as it used to be going down to 6 of them.

Okay, your system appears to be clean. Let's try one more scan and if it doesnt work then I will recommend you head to the Software Forum.

    Download RegSupreme Pro 1.2

Install this program, after you install you will be prompted to "defrag" you registry for best performance. You can go ahead and click YES, should take but a minute or so.

After this completes at the top, click the REGISTRY CLEANER tab. Then click on "Aggressive" and let it scan. Afterwards you will see the total of invalid entries found. Once its complete, select ALL entries and select FIX. The program will then fix the ones that are fixable, the ones that are not will be removed. Type in a backup filename and save to an easy location just in case.

Afterwards, reboot and try the install once more.

Hehe, I started at the software forum and I was told to come here. :) I also just for grins did a Start>search and typed in Symantec and it found one folder "symantec shared" in c:/program files/common files. *wondered if I should delete it*? I will do the reg supreme now. BRB

crappy, still won't finish the install. I'm kind of leaning towards backing up my files and reinstalling my OS. I just did that about a month ago or so. What a pain in the butt.

Also, after I had Norton , I had tried f- secure internet security 2006 (I uninstalled) then I tried AVG (I uninstalled) Now trying to do f-secure through my ISP. Don't know if any of this helps?

Can you elabortate on this please?

  33. BryPaulD

    BryPaulD Private E-2

Sure. I couldn't get onto the internet the other day so I called my ISP and they helped me. It ended up being that I hadn't uninstalled my expired version of sygate. Well after that was fixed they sold me on upgrading my cable speed to 3 meg and as the package included "charter high speed security suite" Something they paired up with f-secure. So I had to download the prog. from their site and got the key, (well 3 of them after all) but so far, this darn thing just won't finish the install.

This is up to you but personally I would stick with AVG AntiVirus & ZoneAlarm for security. If you want antispyware Spy Sweeper is the best for this.

Your computer is clean so I dont think its malware related. What all do you have currently installed for security including firewalls & AV?

  35. BryPaulD

    BryPaulD Private E-2

nothing right now. I uninstalled everything and turned off the XP firewall.
I could call my ISP and cancel the security suite and go with what you recomended. I kind of liked the idea of the anti spam thing f-secure had for the e-mail (similar to norton) as far as the "this is spam" feature and then anytime something came in from that particular sender it would automatically delete it. Is there a prog. like that out there?

  36. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I only use Spy Sweeper, AVG & ZoneAlarm so I honestly don't know.

If you will attach a current HJT log so I can check something.

You can go ahead and uninstall Ewido, I dont see any signs of anything running. I wouldnt think Spybot would block anything.

The only thing I can say from here is, your computer is clean. You can try to post this in the Software Forum again and let them know you have cleaned your system and the problem remains. The other option would be to call your ISP and see if they can do anything.

    Good Luck!:)

Alright. Thank you for all of your help on this issue. :) I keep thinking maybe it was a junk DL or it has a corrupt file in it or something, I don't know. I know I don't want to use norton but I really liked that anti-spam feature. I'll let you know. Thank you sooo much again.
