My computer is being very frustrating right now. I am having trouble with internet explorer and firefox both so it is not just ie that has the problem.

Anyways here is my problem. I start my computer and go to a website. If it is a site where I click there is a text box (like to put in a password or do a search or something) either the moment I click or the moment I type the first letter of what I am going to type a getting started with ineternet explorer opens, or if I am using firefox a window opens saying something like help with firefox. I close these windows but they just keep opening and wont let me back to the page. Sometimes after this happens a few times I am able to get to the page by closing the windows and everything works fine. Sometimes though it just wont stop and I can do nothing. I try to close my computer down and dozens of windows pop up and will not go away. I try to close them and they just open up again. When this happens I just have to manually restart.

I already posted this problem in the malware forum with logs and scans and it was unable to be fixed and suggested to me that I post my problem here.

If anyone has any idea why this is happening or knows anything to help me out it would be greatly appriciated.

Out of curiousity, have you tried another browser (just to make sure) or tried reinstalling either firefox or IE? It's a long shot, but it seems like you're desperate.

I cleared the temp files and the internet history, but I do not know what prefetch is or how to clear that. Also I am not sure of what you mean by internet files. I will reset all my internet settings though, on both firefox and IE.

I did run ccleaner when I had this problem posted in the malware forum and it didn't solve the problem.

Ok this morning I downloaded Internet Explorer 7 and went to put in a password on a page and the "getting started with internet explorer" window opened up imediately. I closed it and it automatically opened again. I did this several times and it kept opening back up. Finally I just sat there for a while and waited. I waited probably five minutes or so then tried to close the window again and it worked. Now everything is working as it should. This seems to only happen when I first get started browsing.

Hitting the "F1" key would bring up the windows you are describing, so it is likely some normal key you type is hotkeyed to mean "help" or F1" (or possibly, ANY key you type is hotkeyed to f1 or help.

    Some quick tests:
At a plain window desktop: start typing. does "help and support" open?
In Word or Wordpad- does a help menu open when you start typing?

Wow... I feel really, really stupid right now. After reading the last post about the F1 key bringing up the help window, I looked down at my keyboard and wouldn't you know... the friggin F1 key was stuck down. I feel like such a fool lol, but at the same time tremendously relieved. I unstuck the key restarted my computer and of course have no problems now. So thank you very much Gecks about mentioning the F1 key opening the help window otherwise I probably never would have even thought of something as simple as looking at that key to see if it was stuck down.

Sorry for posting my problem with the solution being so simple that I just overlooked it.

Thanks to everyone who offered help.

Hey, no worries at all. Stuff like this happens to all of us, and having a stuck key is hardly a relfection of anybody's intellegence. I'm just glad you were able to figure out and fix the problem.

If it makes you feel any better, I wasted about an hour the other day trying to figure out why I couldn't type in word. Turns out the keyboard was unplugged.
