I see I am not the only one with 30% errors in GMail Spam folder

30% is about what I have seen of late. I check frequently, and find 3 or sometimes 4 out of 10 send to purgatory in error. I have emailed the sender, added to my contacts to no avail. I thought is was odd.

Linus Torvalds receives Linux kernel updates via email. He is enraged at the amount that Google Spam Filters move...

    Hi

Not noticed this myself yet, jus checked my Gmail account and spam folder and while a few titles of emails seem legit, the body of text was not from folk I have dealt with, so spam, I guess its a fine line between removing spam and Google would be lambasted if it didnt, then on the other hand over spam filter and they are lambasted again.

Kind of a damned if you do and damned if you dont thing, I guess the email providers can do so much but its the user that has to really step up and know what is legit or not??! am I wrong in assuming this??

I just checked mine (which I don't do nearly enough), and don't have any from the last month in my spam folder that were legit. So mine is working perfectly.

    No, you're not.

Unlike paper mail, with emails the receiver can actually realistically opt out by marking certain email addresses as spammers. Similarly, we can tweak and tune filters and do lots of other things to protect us, but these things only work if we actually know what to flag as spam. From a certain point of view, the internet is actually encouraging personal responsibility in that we all have an obligation to learn how to protect ourselves against phishers and spammers, and a large part of that is in learning how to spot a fake email when we see it. It's the internet version of not giving your home address to a complete stranger.

I can't remember the last time I had one sent to spam falsely in Gmail. I check it a couple of times a week, and there's never anything in there that's legit.

Comcast, on the other hand, flags 10 emails I need and lets through at least twice that many that should be.

I signed up for an Outlook.com account 18 months ago. I have not received a single email - spam or legit - in the spam folder. And that's without touching the spam filter settings. :-D

Totally agree Mimsy, we can blame others until the cows come home, but to be brutally honest we are our own worst enemy as we blame others for things we should take ownership of as in Spam email, its not a new thing and been in the press all the time, so nothing anyone should have missed.

I know education for some is needed but to a point all info is, if something is giving you something for nothing that you have not subscribed too its fake, your bank will not ask for your account details... etc.

All we can do is educate those around us in our social circles be that personal or online.
