    Hello,
    Two days ago, Windows Antivirus Pro popped up on my PC. I was unfortunately typing something when the window appeared and the virus proceeded to download itself and disable my PC's normal functions. I knew about this nasty virus from a class I took in college, and immediately recognized what was happening. Before I could wage war, the virus managed to overload my PC and trigger the blue screen of death. I promptly shut off my computer, accessed the internet through another one and followed instructions from bleepingcomputer.com in order to recover.

    I ran Malwarebytes to initially kill the virus and restarted, but I was having reboot problems. I'm running Microsoft XP and I have NOD installed as my antivirus but unfortunately it's severely outdated and I have no way of updating it until my father decides he wants to help me out. I ran Malwarebytes again when I finally managed to get a successful reboot and found out that the virus managed to hide itself in other files. I also ran Ad-Aware SE Professional just in case. I figured I got rid of it that time.

    No such luck. Today, I found the virus had piggybacked through IE 8 when I opened it. I ran Malwarebytes to destroy it, and it seems that it's gone now but I'm apprehensive about opening IE. Since I didn't originally turn to MG for help, I'm wondering if someone can make sense of my Malwarebytes logs and tell me if I should proceed about this a different way. I'm considering a reformat of the hard drive. I've attached the logs I have, but if something needs to be done a different way I'll try it. Thanks in advance!

    UPDATE:

    I chose to follow the Read & Run directions in this section. I'll post the logs after I'm done running the programs for viewing. I'm still having reboot problems. The reboot runs through all the way until the User Login screen is supposed to show up. My false starts get a black screen with only the mouse point.

    Okay, it was exhausting but I did everything! Attaching all logs and will wait patiently to see if I'm clean. So far PC has not been acting funky since I ran Combofix, but you never know. I appreciate it! <3

    P.S. Putting the Malwarebytes' log here since I can't upload more than 4 files.

    You need to put ComboFix on your desktop as instructed, not here:
    c:\downloads\ComboFix.exe

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    kxxppkh

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\vmsuo.sys
    c:\windows\system32\mrkln.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windowsmod.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WZSZXerfwerwer

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    hey TimW, thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I was unable to access the internet on my PC for 2 days, so I'm sorry I didn't get back to you.

    I didn't realize that I hadn't gotten rid of Viewpoint. I promptly did that before running combofix the correct way. I'm usually not this inattentive to detail but it happens :)

    Anyway here are the logs. My PC is running MUCH better after what you had me do. I haven't had the reboot problem I mentioned before. Please let me know if there is anything else I've done incorrectly or anything else I should do. Thank you again!

    Your logs are clean. However you should run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
