I first noticed that I might have some problems when I ran Ad aware, and again and again and again and it kept finding new entries/files/whatever it finds. Then, I checked my Add and Remove programs list and there is a bunch of stuff there that I don't recognize. Some stuff I'm not sure whether it should be there or not. However, nearly everything is missing the change/remove button. I don't know where to start.

    Hi

Adware can scare many users due to it flagging harmless tracking cookies as potential baddies, these not bad, they are a necessity of surfing the net and websites, but as you have entries in Add/Remove that you dont recognise it maybe worth you running out malware 1st steps guide, then attaching all the logs requested and then our malware experts will review them and if any malware is found they will post some further removal instructions.

as a note and I have this, in Add/Remove there maybe some strange entries like eg. ????????????? random numbers, these can be associated with some printers.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Ok, I got to the getrunkey part and got stuck. I downloaded it, then I have no idea what's going on. I downloaded it to My Downloads. Then, I see nowhere to unzip it. I must be missing something. If I click on the file attachment.htm in my download manager, then brings me to a majorgeeks page and says that my web browser has restricted this file from showing active content that could access my computer. And second, I feel stupid, but what is Windows Explorer? Is this different from Internet Explorer? Because I do not feel comfortable using Internet Explorer. confused

This is the instructions for both the GetRun and ShowNew downloads...GetRun.

It would be best to uninstall and then re-download to the desktop ...then unzip it to a folder that you create such as C:\MGTools ....do this by opening My Computer / double click the C drive / then right click a blank area in that window and chose New / folder ....

Can you download Counterspy? HJT? Are you having any other issues with the instructions?

I'm sorry that was a little rude. First, when I save getrunkey to my desktop then right click it, it has an option to zip it, not unzip it. Also, if I try to just open it, I have to approve some active content thing, it brings me back here to sign back in. When it does that, it brings me to a "cannot find server/this page cannot be displayed" page. I'm just so frustrated.

Let's do this one step at a time .....when you say nothing works, could you explain that, please.

Can you download Counterspy and run it?
(as a side note....when you log into MG's make sure you check the remember me box).

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now see if you can run the online scans .....IE Bitdefender and Panda.

    Edited to add:
I added the txt file from shownew also.

The Snownew file was empty ....the Getrun was ok ....

Can you get a HJT log?

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Let me know what you can and can't do.
