I try to set up network on XP and cannot see it

I have an XP machine connected to a D-Link wireless router. I have a Windows ME machine connected to the router via an ethernet cable.

When I try to set up a network so I can share files between the two machines, it will not work.

I run the Home or Office Networking Wizard on the XP machine but when it finishes, I never see this network. I cannot locate it or anything. It's as if it was never set up. What am I doing wrong?

 

you must setup a workgroup name such as mshome
name each computer diff. one, moe. other one, joe

the xp should be the host.
run network wizard on both.

. Make sureboth PCs are on the same Workgroup
. Try disabling the Windows XP firewall
. See if you can ping the other machine from each machine. Try pinging both the IP address and machine name
. Make sure both PCs have the Client for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing. On WinME, make sure you're not using "Windows Logon" instead of the Client for MS Networks, and make sure you don't hit ESC at the logon screen (which would prevent access to the LAN).
. Make sure both the WinME and WinXP system have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checked, which is usually on the WINS tab in Advanced properties of TCP/IP properties (yes, it's well-buried). WinXP does not use NetBEUI at all, so it will not comunicate correctly with Windows 2000 or Windows 4 PCs using that protocol.
