I like that it has Antivirus:major spyware:major protection etc., Internet security system :major, and my favorite is the PC tune-up :major, all in one simple program.

is it not worth it? if so, why? and what is a better alternative?? :confused

    No Anti-virus is perfect.

    I prefer MalwareBytes, or AVG.

I have had more than one occasion where I have had to "clean up" after Norton, McAfee, or WebRoot.

Unless things have changed, Norton was always a MASSIVE resource hog, and slowed PCs with minimal RAM to a crawl. I'm really not a big fan of it, and it is at the bottom of my list.

However, that is just personal experience, and preference speaking. For reference, I use AVG, and supplement it with MalwareBytes free scanner.

    Thanks, but..

Well what im trying to ask is, is having all these features in one program worth the RAM "hoggage"?

Also, what do you mean by "clean up"????

By "cleanup" he means that you need to remove all registry items pertaining to the program.

I don't do suites. I simply do not trust one company to do everything well.
I run av from one company, malware detectors and preventors from two others (different from the av company) and a firewall from yet a different company.

I would not recommend Norton/Symantec software to anyone, due to past experiences.

However, if you are happy with your software, there's nothing wrong with keeping it.

I'm not a Norton user, but everything worth reading that I've seen in the past year would indicate that Norton is no longer the resource problem it once was. I wouldn't use it myself just because I can't see any point in paying for something you can get the equivalent of for free, but if you prefer the easy way then there's no reason not to stick with it imo. :)

    Hi Philbins

I have to say first off you are not an idiot, and for one reason mainly, in that you are thinking of security, doesnt matter what the application is, its that you are thinking of securing your PC from known threats.

As for if Norton is the best well debatable and many will sing its praises and some wont, personally and ALL I can offer is my personal opinion is that its now not that bad, 360 is good as an all rounder that covers all bases for the novice/basic PC user who doesnt want to delve into the murky depths of security apps.

BUT if you do want to delve and dive into the depths of security apps, then What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

Read this here as its one of the best guides on securing your PC you will ever find on the internet How to Protect yourself from malware!

The basics from this guide that I use in any PC that I own myself or build for others is.

    Spywareblaster
    Avast Free
Windows built in Firewall if Windows 7 if not then PCtools Firewall
    Windows Defender
Malwarebytes (as a standalone scanner in its free version)
Superantispyware (as a standalone in its free version)

The latter two are secondary scans to just double check my PCs for malware.

*note all that I use are free and I have never (x fingers) have ever had malware, as the main security on any PC is YOU as the user, dont download from P2P or any site that you do not know the history of (majorgeeks you are safe with as we test all apps before listing... no other site had done this before us), to dont wildly click popups that the browser shows to no opening links/attachements from users you do not trust.

I only installed Norton software once (Norton Works). It was a trial, the software did what I expected, so I wanted to register it. Only to discover that the software was no longer available. So I just forgot about it. I also forgot to uninstall it.

Then one day my computer suddenly wouldn't boot. It took me three days to find out that it was that Norton software that prevented the computer from booting. The trial had expired, so the software wouldn't let the computer boot, not even in Safe mode!

That experience is why I would never again let any Symantecware on my computers, nor recommend it to anyone.

    Hi

I've never liked Norton, mainly because it doesn't let you deal with "virus-like" files (different Windows tweak files, etc.) that I have. Also, it costs money.

I personally use Comodo Internet Security. It's got antivirus, spyware protection, and firewall. It's free, has a free forum, it's always been free. They have a paid version, probably more for corporate use. Best of all, Comodo is COMPLETELY configurable... easy enough for someone that barely knows what a virus is, but enough options to satisfy a Major Geek.

I don't like the Sandbox part of it, so I disable that.

I've ran Comodo for several years now, and have yet to see an infection on my PC it couldn't handle straight away.

Side note: many people have mentioned Norton is a resource hog, or was. Comodo uses ALMOST 4MB of RAM and doesn't slow down my 6 year old computer in the least!
