So I got a nasty BSOD and had to go through the steps of copying files over to a tmp file and then deleting out of system32 and then copying them back with repair files ok did that, now I can access my windows xp and its all nasty looking and what not ballony if I may, but do have all my programs some work some dont but reinstalling some works, I cannot download any upgrades from microsoft updates I have 63 right now and all failed. when I go into IE and start clicking to search or click on some links it says "The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context", also I have tried putting on a disc windows installer to try and download it from the ROM and it says when it tries to install "Setup could not verify the integrity of the files needed for installation. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer". Things I have tried to fix this are, repair on xp home disc, recovery console chkdsk /r, fixboot, fixmbr.... I think it is only running SP2 but like I said it will not update anything at all

Can you do a System Restore to a time before the BSOD occurred?

For some reason I have none, I looked in the System Volume Information file also and it only shows from there on.

Not sure if I understand this correct - did you do a Windows repair install?

yes I did try the repair and what I know to do in recovery console is there anything else I could try or some file links I could be missing that I can burn to a disc

The Windows repair should have taken care of all that. I cannot think of anything else right now.

Regarding your failing Windows Updates, can you go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and click on Update History? This should show you the error codes for each failed update; what are they?

I tried the repair on the xp disc I knew there was something I was forgetting, when I run the repair and it gets done copying and fixing files and then reboots it goes to the XP screen and instead of loading it says underneath the Windows XP screen Please wait.... and it never goes off that screen unless I reboot it then go back into windows and does the same thing, its been on that screen for a day. I will try to get to microsoft website but like I said it gives me that error message about the active activation when I click any links or try to do it through address bar.

    to the OP:

If a repair did not fix it, and you don't have a recovery partition, you might want to get an external HD and then copy your stuff from the HD over to the external HD. Then reinstall Windows from scratch.

If you are getting to the point of reinstalling XP, you might want to consider going ahead and upgrading to Windows 7, providing your hardware meets the minimum requirements. Reason for that is, why reinstall XP again, when you can have some better stability with Windows 7.
