I Want To Add Ram

I have a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DQ6 motherboard, running Windows 10, and want to add another set of twin sticks of RAM. In May, I purchased 2 sticks of Crucial 4Gb (2x2Gb) DDR2-800 UDIMM, part number CT848124.

My motherboard has a total of 4 slots for RAM. This may seem like a foolish question, but can I install another set of of twin sticks of the same RAM to increase my RAM? I know it would be advantageous to buy 4 matching sticks of RAM but that's not in my budget.

You may need to drop the ram speed and or the timings for all 4 sticks to work together

The Crucial Scan shows that I can add another set of twin sticks of CT848124.

What do you mean by "You may need to drop the ram speed and or the timings for all 4 sticks to work together"? Are you referring to settings in BIOS? If so, I've never changed BIOS settings except for boot order. I would need exact directions to do this. If you mean the speed of the RAM itself, would you recommend the RAM that would satisfy this requirement from the list created by the Crucial Scan?

Buying the exact same as what you have will suffice.

    Code:
    GA-EP45-DQ6 (rev. 1.0)
4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory
BITness of your operating system could also limit how much RAM can be detected.

For example, let's say you have 2 ram modules eg 2x 2GB @1600Mhz with 9-9-9-24. Certain mobos will allow you to populate all 4 ram slots but you will need to drop the ram speed to say 1333Mhz and possibly also relax the ram timings slightly. If you run all 4 ram sticks @1600Mhz it is highly possible / probable that your system may BSOD or freeze.

The ram speeds referred to above are an example. I have not looked at your particular mobo or ram speeds.

The ram speed and timings are located in the Bios.

I would suggest you do a bit of research prior to ordering more ram unless someone on this board has a similar mobo to yours and can advise you. Or perhaps search/post in the Gigabyte [or Giga-byte forum] to make sure that there will be no issues populating all 4 ram slots.

    Good Luck

I'm glad I posted this topic in this forum. I was afraid it would by iffy.

What does "drop the ram speed to say 1333Mhz" mean?

What does "BITness of your operating system" mean? I'm running Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.345).

All you need to determine is whether Windows 10 is 32-bit or 64-bit.

    It's x64. . . Bitness, gotcha. (don't I feel dumb  ).

    Then your good.
Product number CT848124 is a 4GB kit (2 x 2GB) and the speed is the same as what's currently installed.

    Here's your motherboard specs.

BTW How did you manage to install Windows 10?

"BTW How did you manage to install Windows 10?"

My motherboard and CPU were able to handle Win10. I bought a new adapter card and video card for it. I think it killed 2 of my hard drives, though. They were working the night before with XP x64 (which I loved and dearly miss) and after I installed Win10 and connected them, they weren't recognized by Disk Manager. I took them to a pc repair shop in town to have them checked and they were dead. All of my other hard drives survived it though.

Let us know when you've installed the additional RAM.

FYI I you want to quote part of a post, select that part and a Reply button will appear.

Just thought I'd let you know that I got the RAM in the mail today and installed it. No crashes or BSOD!

Thanks for all your help :)
